"Big Swing Face" is one of Buddy's more popular albums, and I would certainly describe it as a classic. I first heard Buddy Rich when I was a kid when an older cousin of mine played me some of his LPs. Needless to say, I was mesmerised, and spent the next four decades of my life as a drummer.
This CD version also contains tracks that are not on the original LP release, which I still own. Even today, this recording remains one of my all-time favourite Rich albums. You can really feel the atmosphere of the gig, and the band just groove so well. His music crossed categories, and attracted a huge audience, and even if you're not into jazz, or drumming for that matter, you will love this album.

This is a very heavy hard bop album and is well worth a listen. It is a concious offering and is very dark in places. There are several sections where Max and Abbey Lincoln get to stretch out on their own and the dynamics and interaction between the two musicians is sublime. The opening track (driva' Man) sets the scene with Abbey Lincoln singing from the perspective of a slave and her relationship with the slave driver. Colman Hawkins is on fire, playing a solo full of soul and lyricism. Freedom Day is a hectic hard bop offering delivered in triple time and again shows Mr Roach's melodic style. Triptych is a piece that is on the more experimental tip where Abbey Lincoln expresses the feeling of a generation dealing with the struggle and ... Read More:

this is my favourite of all Clifford Brown's albums - as always his sound has soul, style, grace, and depth, and so do the compositions
love every track on here... great way to spend a morning with a coffee this and some of mother nature's finest
Release Date January 22, 1996
To put it briefly, this disc contains the most important track ever made by the greatest (by far) drummer who ever lived, and it is also high on the list of all time finest big band recordings. If you're into any of those categories then at £5.47 it is a no-brainer: buy it. Further, Amazon partner it with Buddy Rich's Big Swing Face album, his other most seminal disc: the two together give you a huge chunk of core percussion history.
To elaborate: in the mid-sixties, drum-phenomenon Buddy Rich put together a new Big Band, at a time when this form seemed to be on the way out in the face of small (economical) rock-n-roll groups. The first outings of this band caused a major buzz, and by September 1966 Rich felt they were ready to record. Most ... Read More:

This recording is an essential addition to any serious Jazz collection, capturing as it does five Jazz giants recorded together for the one and only time.
Charlie Parker is on Alto Sax, Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet, Bud Powell Piano, Charles Mingus bass and Max Roach on drums. From the first number "Perdido" you know this something special. A medium tempo version which never stops swinging. Gillespie in particular is in fiery form on this number. On "Salt Peanuts" Bud Powell plays a memorable solo, which precedes a thunderous drum solo from Max Roach.
The atmosphere is fantastic with the crowd applauding the musicians solos, and sometimes you can hear the musicians cajoaling each other to better performances.
