This was the first opera I ever saw live, during its initial London run a few months after the Aldeburgh premiere. I still carry vivid memories of that evening as a magical experience. And magic certainly lies at the heart of this entrancing (almost literally) piece.
From the sounds of the forest breathing in the opening string glissandos to the fairies' glittering benediction on Duke Theseus house at the end, Britten conjures a wonderful array of colours and pictures from his relatively modest orchestra. Each group of characters is given its own distinctive orchestral palette - strings with woodwinds predominate for the Lovers, the trombone fills in its fatter, comical tones when the Rustics appear, horns add a touch of regality ... This album, featuring Stan Getz, Paul Gonsalves, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie and Wyton Kelly is a sublime record of a unique event.
The stellar cast do not disappoint (though Hawks sounds a little rough). Paul Gonsalves gives a breathtaking rendition of "Without a Word of Warning", proving he was the master balladeer of the time. This is a fact remarked upon by Stan Getz in the liner notes ("we were all gassed by Paul's playing on this date man!"). He also refers to Gonsalves as being a very underated player, which indeed he was and indeed, still is.
The openeing track, "Dizzy Atmosphere" is an upbeat number that allows all the main participants to stretch out a bit. As Gonsalves solos, you can hear the shouts of encouragement ... Read More:

Recorded in 1957, when the vocabulary of be-bop has become a normal part (probably) of majority of the jazz musicians active at the time, "Serenade to a Bus Seat" gives a remarkable and very creative workout within the style, making it somewhat more flexible than the founding fathers would have made it... Terry has a deep-rooted swing experience and he seems to use it in his approach to tone and sometimas phrasing, while the brilliant group assembled for this date mostly consists of players interested in stretching the boundaries of bop further (which, to many people's surprise, included inspiration from the past jazz styles in cases of hard bop and free-jazz)...
So - this is a be-bop record, a great be-bop record but not completely typical ... Read More:
Release Date November 14, 2006
This recording is an essential addition to any serious Jazz collection, capturing as it does five Jazz giants recorded together for the one and only time.
Charlie Parker is on Alto Sax, Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet, Bud Powell Piano, Charles Mingus bass and Max Roach on drums. From the first number "Perdido" you know this something special. A medium tempo version which never stops swinging. Gillespie in particular is in fiery form on this number. On "Salt Peanuts" Bud Powell plays a memorable solo, which precedes a thunderous drum solo from Max Roach.
The atmosphere is fantastic with the crowd applauding the musicians solos, and sometimes you can hear the musicians cajoaling each other to better performances.

Kenny Dorham is one of the most under-rated figures in jazz history. He is constantly obscured by the hysteria surrounding his peers (Miles Davis and the like). Whilst Dorham may not have the lyrical conciseness of Miles, the virtuistic bravado of Dizzy or the heartfelt truth of Chet; his be-bop stylings are unmistakable and unique. In truth he sits somewhere in the middle of Miles, Dizzy and Chet (think the tonal vunerability of Chet playing with the phrasing of Dizzy, and the inflective ability to follow an idea of Miles and you're halfway there). Perhaps this the reason for his obscurity, the fact that he is so 'middle of the road' when compared to other figures throughout jazz. But if you're a fan 60's jazz and you think you've heard it all, if you're ... Read More:
