Oh what joy to have discovered again the very special talent of Ottilie! As a teenager I went to listen to her in London with The Chris Barber Band - at the time I realised what an amazing voice and talent I was listening to but only later did I realise just how good. High up there with the greats of jazz singers, and certainly with a strong hint of Bessie Smith. ENJOY!

Melly croons his way through over a dozen well-known and lesser known songs with his jazz chums on this very fine record. His version of 'September Song' starts off bizarrely and then settles down while 'Anything Goes' and all the others are beautifully performed. He sings well, the musicians are all excellent and the production outstanding. This is real swinging stuff.

Since George Melly died earler this year, I have tried to buy up some of the recordings that made him famous and brought back memories of the two occasions when I was lucky enough to see him perform live. Of all the available albums, this one may not have the most recognisable standards (though Frankie and Johnny are present and correct) but it perhaps sums 'Goodtime George' up best - the title really does say it all.
Even the more bluesy numbers feel quite swinging and up-tempo (check out Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair) and fun numbers like Mississippi Mud and Abdul Abulbul Amir - not one you could get away with singing these days, I should think! - transport you to a night at Ronnie Scott's just before Christmas, the booze flowing ... This CD is a collection made up from earlier records with typical trad jazz input for which Monty Sunshine is famed. However it is not just Monty Sunshine clarinet dominated, as all the musicians are superb with particularly forceful contributions from trombone, trumpet and banjo. There are opportunities for solos in addition to excellent ensemble playing, and though sometimes a little strained the music is always professional. There is a mixture of live and studio recordings, but all are equally well produced.
The choice of numbers is trad jazz inspired with everything from traditional pieces and spirituals to popular tunes and anything melodic in between. The first track is a German cradle song "Sleep My Little Prince" ... Read More:

The title of this CD and the opening track "Doing The Hambone" (composed by Lu Watters) relate to a club named Hambone Kelly's that opened in San Francisco in 1947. This followed a period of revival of traditional jazz where towards the end of the 1930s many jazz musicians playing dance music for a living had been disappointed and frustrated by big band and arranged swing. Lu Watters and his Yerba Bueno Jazz Band were leaders of this revivalist movement in America.
This CD includes 20 tracks of good time music with instant appeal and with no pretence. The numbers are played in a lively "Dixieland" style with a strong cornet lead from Lu Watters in a front line with clarinet and trombone for tight ensemble playing, ... Read More:

George Lewis was a gifted and forceful clarinetist in the Johnny Dodds style. He stayed on in New Orleans after the closing of Storyville and the move of jazz to Chicago and beyond, and he was largely unknown until he played with Bunk Johnson as part of the revivalist movement in the early 1940s. The tracks for this superb CD were recorded in New Orleans in 1951 and 1953. The CD is in two halves having 6 tracks by a quartet with support for George Lewis's clarinet from piano, banjo and bass; and 6 tracks by a traditional band with trumpet and trombone joining George Lewis in the front line, and support from piano, banjo, bass and drums.
Revivalism implies that traditional jazz had at best been superceded, or had been lost, or even had ... Read More:

The CD opens with "St. Phillip Street Breakdown", a composition by George Lewis indicating inspiration and influence on Monty Sunshine. The clarinet playing is reminiscent of Lewis being scintillating at both high and low registers, and this opening leads into 72 minutes of easy listening sparkling jazz. Some tracks are studio recordings and some are live - all are excellent.
The CD's superb repertoire embraces traditional numbers arranged by Monty Sunshine such as "East Coast Trot", "Bugle Boy March" and "My Old Kentucky Home" where the talents of all musicians in the group are ably demonstrated, as with vintage numbers such as "Wolverine Blues", "Memphis Blues" and "Bourbon Street Parade", plus the clarinet test-piece "High Society", ...
