Vaughan Williams: Fantasia On Christmas Carols, Hodie

I bought this a couple of years ago and return to it regularly - a sure sign of a good recording. I like the music of Vaughan Williams and this is a good example of his music. The Fantasia was a big surprise - its a lovely setting of some well known carols. John Barrow has a superb baritone voice. The Hodie takes a little more getting into but it is worth the effort. Both choirs and orchestra have good sounds. At this price you can't go wrong!

This has to be the most beautiful piece of music i've ever heard, and every time i listen it never fails to reduce me to tears! As the previous reviewer states, parts of it are taken from the great Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody, and it truly touches your soul. There's nothing better than putting it in the old CD player, sitting on the sofa on a cold sunday afternoon with a blanket, a nice glass (or two) of wine, some chocolate and a box of tissues....turn the volume up and just lose yourself in its haunting melody. Utterly priceless. Enjoy :)

The World's Greatest Mozart Album

Putting a title like `Worlds Greatest' on the front of a CD is obviously a bold claim, and one which many people have become so familiar with that they tend to take it with a pinch of salt. There are so many ways of trying to catch the buyers interest that very few titles like these really jump out at the buyer.

This one did jump out at me, though not so much for the choice of tracks, more for the quality of artists who perform them. Considering this is only a 2CD set, far too short for any Mozart compilation, the list of performers reads like a roll call for the best `Last Night of the Proms' ever staged.

The Best Classical Album in the World...Ever!

A fantastic selection of all the tunes you've ever said "Oh.. that's the tune from the ....advert, isn't it? What's it called?" about.

OK that's a very trite comment, but you get my point. Pure enjoyment, without the intervention of the tracks in a single classical album which you have to pretend to appreciate if you're not to look like a Philistine.

An absolute belter..an education, and a gateway to composers you'd never heard of, (neither had I).

Shaken and Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond Project

Having taken over the mantle of composing the James Bond movie soundtracks for the 90s (and very good they are too), David Arnold revisits Bond theme songs in this project, working with a wide range of artists to produce a set of really interesting covers. And the whole CD is worth buying just for the astounding first track - David McAlmont is Miss Shirley Bassey as his falsetto vamps up 'Diamonds are Forever' in homage to the queen of Bond theme songs and gay icon. After that you feel rather let down by Aimee Mann's understated 'Nobody does it better' - although listened to separately, this track will grow on you. Chrissie Hynde rocks out in 'Live and let die', and the Propellerheads do their drum'n'bass thing brilliantly with 'On her Majesty's secret service'. ... Read More:

It is clear from reading other reviews on Amazon and elsewhere that people have mixed feelings about this collection. Some would have an album of entirely new recordings (and maybe more original songs and fewer covers) while others would have preferred an album comprising entirely re-issues. Perhaps it was decided that this compromise would suit everybody. Certainly, I'd been expecting a compilation of Cliff's duet hits ever since the release of his 6-CD boxed set (Singles collection), which contained every British solo single that Cliff had recorded up to that point, but noticeably avoided all the duets. John Barry: The Beyondness of Things

I bought this after reading reviews here, and also on discovering one of my fav films "Somewhere In Time" had a CD soundtrack, which is priceless. This CD is good, but there is no magic, no soul, no free passage to another realm, unlike the film sountrack.

I also bought the book by Matheson on the back of the film, and boy is he a weird writer! His style sucks. The director of "Somewhere in Time" read the book and decided he must make a film of it, much to our good fortune.

It really was a question of being in the right place at the right time. A very rare alignment of director (film), J Barry (music) and Matheson (book) but sadly I dont think the magic could ever be repeated.

Still it was fun trying.

John Barry - The Collection - 40 Years of Film Music

The reason why this box set is worthwhile is not all the movies represented here have had their soundtracks released on CD. Since Silva Screen's extensive Barry project began, FSM has released 'Born Free', 'Deadfall', 'Aice's Adventures In Wonderland', 'The Appointment', 'King Kong' & 'Monte Walsh' & Intrada has released 'Mary Queen Of Scots. However the original soundtracks for 'Robin & Marian', 'Walkabout', 'The Deep' & 'Raise The Titanic' remain unreleased so until FSM (or someone like them) steps forward, these versions are the only way you or I will hear them. Imporant to note too is that these versions found on this box set are faithfull to the original scores and not Barry's own re-recordings which he made in the 70's for polydor.
