Those who remember the Danny Elfman epics from the the Tim Burton films may well be surprised at how different this score is. Where as Elfman used a much more uptempo score with flurries of brass, the Zimmer/Howard score is alternately high percussive or symphonic with strings. Hans Zimmer's score is driving and percussive, similar in style to his scores for Crimson Tide and Gladiator but a a very dark feel all of its own. His music picks out the isolation of both Batman and the Joker, the former with a heroic, determined feel and the latter with dread and fear.
Like all great scores it can almost tell the story through music in its own right; John Williams' great scores for Star Wars is the kind of tradition this music belongs ... Read More:

Fantastic soundtrack. As a writer looking for inspiration for film music, this has to be one of my absolute favourites. Buy it now!
Release Date June 14, 2005
Director Christopher Nolan dispenses with the services of his regular Minimalist/Ambient composer, David Julyan, in favour of Hollywood heavyweights, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, who ironically come up with a very Julyan-esque score. Dark and austere, like Nolan's masterful film, these atmospheric Minimalist pieces are a million miles from the whimsy of Danny Elfman and the bombast of Elliot Goldenthal, and come across like Philip Glass on steroids. Just as Nolan reinvented the Batman franchise, Zimmer and Howard create a totally original soundscape to complement the movie.
Bleak, disturbing and thrilling this is film scoring of the highest order.

A fantastic selection of all the tunes you've ever said "Oh.. that's the tune from the ....advert, isn't it? What's it called?" about.
OK that's a very trite comment, but you get my point. Pure enjoyment, without the intervention of the tracks in a single classical album which you have to pretend to appreciate if you're not to look like a Philistine.
An absolute belter..an education, and a gateway to composers you'd never heard of, (neither had I).

There are few occasions these days where music will take your emotions to the depths of despair and up to the highest cloud and back before the album is finished. Mostly this happens in film soundtracks and Hannibal is easily one of the finest. There is humour, sadness, heart-pounding atmosphere and some pieces that will make your heart sing and sent your soul alight as the finest music does, and should. The highlight of the album is Vide cor Meum by Patrick Cassidy - the album is worth buying for this alone. When I first watched the film I became determined to discover which great opera that piece was from, not realising that it was written specially for the film. Rarely will you find a piece of music that makes you want to simply sit back, shut your eyes ... Read More:

I wish I had paid more heed to the only 1 star rating by 'a customer'. I too was very disappointed by this CD. I had expected full on concert style piano playing, instead of which I got 'one finger' style playing, very popular with the masses, but not very deep. If you like Clayderman, this may well please you.

Classic Zimmer and some. Listen carefully and you hear strains of The Da Vinci Code and Gladiator filtering through. Not a critisism, it's just his style. You'll also here the influences of other classical composers coming through, not unusual. While parlay is a delightful homage to Morricone's scoring to the classic duel in 'Once Upon a Time in the West'. Makes me smile everytime I hear it, and wish it were longer.

This is a BRILLIANT soundtrack and just as good as the first with the memorable theme tunes of the organ playing DAVY JONES, the satanic monstrous KRAKEN and the tuneful, boingy theme of the guy we all love JACK SPARROW. There's also plenty more music from the film (which did I forget to mention is AMAZING only second in my opinion to the STAR WARS SAGA) such as the music accompnying the brilliantly choregraphed sword fight on the island leading to the giant wheel and much more. However I agree with the previous review (that you may have read also) that the 'remix', the last track on the CD is absolutely AWFUL and I can't express this enough, its TERRIBLE, its DRAB, ITS THE WORST TRACK OF MUSIC I'VE EVER HEARD and does not fit in with the other music AT ALL or with the Pirates ... No, no, no. This is not the best film music ever composed. It is all the same - even the terrifying movement that was cut barely makes anything tingle. Yes, it has to experienced with the film, but this is where this soundtrack falls down.
This soundtrack does not stand on its own: if it is supposed to, it falls into that awful Classic FM genre of baroque-style easy listening, which surely must become a graveyard eventually.
