When I first watched Fargo I thought it was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. As soon as I could I bought the video and found I loved the soundtrack so much I kept rewinding my favourite bit in the credits to listen to it again and again.

Perhaps I'm a bit sad but if you're looking for beautiful music which sets a mood but isn't too intrusive there is no better CD than this. I mean, that's exactly what movie soundtracks are for! They fill a gap that no other sort of music can.

I listen to it when I'm writing, when I'm working, or just when I'm going to bed and want something dreamy and soft.

The only thing I can say against it is that it really isn't much good if you fancy a dance or you need to wig out.

The Man Who Wasn't There

OK, so aside from the classical pieces imported into the soundtrack (all great, and entirely appropriate to the tone and content of the film) there's only really one theme here.

But what a theme.

The Trial of Ed Crane is a truly beautiful piece of music, which is oh so sad but somehow uplifting. Apart from ending rather suddenly, it's the perfect soundtrack tune, magnifying and complementing its film perfectly.

Those four minutes are worth the purchase price alone, but when you add the Beethoven, the Mozart and the other Burwell stuff, it becomes a bargain. Must have for Coen-fans who like their music.

... is playing the music as serious as possible. In "Adaptation", Carter Burwell does it again. He's the king of comedy scores, not only because he writes music for the best and most unusual comedies in movie industry (the Coen films, and now the Spike Jonze / Charlie Kaufman films) but because he understands that the music should reflect what goes in the characters' minds and not be merely a cynical and distant interpretation, full of comedic "please-laugh-here" moments. This is beautiful music, which perfectly survives without the - by the way, brilliant - film it scores. And there's a remix of the main theme (a thing which is getting common these days) which actually works, with Fatboy Slim doing a much better and subtle job than Paul Oakenfold ... Read More:

Carter Burwell - Doc Hollywood Original Soundtrack

Carter Burwell has written a number of moving scores, accompanying strong musical styles and emotive chords that make Burwell's music so easy to recognise. Doc Hollywood is not too different from the rest of his scores. It manages to pull off a very emotional love theme without making it "cheesy" and at the same time emphasising the country melodies juxtaposed against the big city grind.

Aside from being a fantastic film in itself, the score only helps it further; its quirky and original style livens up the film. This score is a must for anyone who enjoys Carter Burwell scores, as well as anyone else who enjoys excellent film music.

As with most soundtracks some of the tracks are the mood music for the scenes and there is also the Bjork track which plays out the film. It's not entirely fair to criticise it as an album as the pieces were written for the film not primarily for listening to independently. If there is a few tracks just over a minute long that is because they were for scenes of that length.

Some of the tracks are beautiful short compostitions that do stand alone as wonderful gentle pieces of melodic music and there are also pieces that are slightly (intenionally) harsh and a little grating. Before Night Falls

Found this record whilst on holiday in Spain. It was my girfriend who bought it and sent it to me, and i have been indebted to her ever since! This record has some real Cuban gems, but "Ay Mariposa" really stands out. The collection of songs can have you up and dancing one minute, and can equally evoke more reflective feelings the next. A must for someone wishing to expand their music collection in a new direction. Great stuff - can't wait to catch the movie!

Miller's Crossing [CASSETTE]

Joel and Ethan Coen's films are all very different but yet all possess surprisingly good soundtracks. The music in this soundtrack is both relaxing and thought provoking, creating a pleasant reminiscense of the 30s. The sountrack is also one of the few soundtracks available which doesn't require the film to accompany it, it is flawed in that their selection of music this time is pleasant but occasionally disjointed, but still a good soundtrack in its own right.
