1995 was probably quite an intimidating time for Morbid Angel. The whole grunge/alt. rock thing was starting to really get into high gear. On the heavier side of music the word 'industrial' was starting to be mentioned in closer and closer circles to the mainstream. Extreme metal bands must have been wondering what, if anything the future held for them. This is somewhat evident on David Vincent's last studio album with the band and shows the only discernible signs of compromise in their long and eminent career.

After sampling 'In Legue with Satan' off the great lightnin' to the nations compliaton CD I imediatly bout the first 3 Venom albums and I have to say their debut is the best of the 3 and an absolute classic slab of metal!

Now everyone says Venom are notorious for bad production and they are right, but I have a feeling it was semi-diliberate to try and achieve the heaviest sound they could muster and it pays off, this is a brutal album and must of sounded like pure noise back in 1981(!).

The album opens up on a surprisingly weak song 'Sons of Satan' but dont let that put you off, the title track is a stonecold classic, so much that Iron Maiden completly ripped off the main riff for one of their best songs '2 minutes to midnight', compare ... Read More:

gallery of suicide is the finest album cannibal corpse have ever made. the comparisons that can be made between it and the other albums are twofold; the difference between it and all of the albums featuring chris barnes on vocals, and the superiority of it over the two other george fisher albums to date. firstly, this is george fishers crowning achievment as a death metal vocalist, and moves him beyond the likes of glen benton, john tardy and yes, chris barnes as arguably the worlds most proficient and variable death metal singer. as an example of his ability, listen to the intro from 'blood drenched execution', and ask whether you could imagine chris barnes makin a song sound that brutal. cannibal corpse are supposed to be one of the most extreme bands around, so when ... Leaders Not Followers Vol.1

This CD is an excellent filler, and gives an ideal insight into the band members lives as tape-traders. I'm not usually a hardcore fan, but Politicians and Nazi Punks are both excellent here. The track by Slaughter showcases how funny they were, and how innovative they were at the same time. The Pentagram track makes you wonder why you can't find an album by them anywhere, it's so good. Personally I'm a big fan of Death's and this shows the band in their formative stages, with an excellently done song again, simple but effective. I love Repulsion too, and Maggots In Your Coffin is as good a cover as Horrified was, when done by Mortician, but you can actually hear it this time!

Overall a good chance to hear what Napalm like, and how good they are at covers...

The first Cradle of Filth album I bought was 'Midian', which I was very impressed by. After reading some reviews I decided to buy 'Cruelty And The Beast'. However, due to a mix up I received this album instead. So I thought "What the hell? I might aswell listen to it!". Little did I know that my taste in music would be changed so dramatically by this album.

The first thing I noticed was the contrast between the production on this album and on Midian. The "wall of sound" on Midian is replaced by a sparse sonic landscape. The guitars are fuzzy, the bass cold, the drums tight; all backed by keyboards, brimming with elegance. The vocals Dani produced on this album are raw, more true to the 'black metal' that was beginning to surface in Norway.

Death Church

Now without trying to sound big or clever, I am a big fan of Rudimentary PEni, and this album is most commonly addressed or put across as their greatest, while I agree it fully deseves 4/5 stars, its a little different from their other work, let me elaborate.

Their two earlier eps, the Rudimentary Peni ep and the Farce ep are fast paced and contain some of my favourite tracks, this album comes after these two and is still in the same vein, however the riffs are slower, and the lyrics still as sharp as a knife and as hard hitting as a hammer (resulting in a knifammer), partly due to the lead singer (Nick Blinko) and also due to the music of the songs which greatly contrasts this.

Venoms finest moment is here on this fine re-issue of a true classic black metal album. the singer is not good, the guitar is rubbish and the bass is awful but its venom, true metal. easily the best black metal album ever, no competition............CLASS

1994 saw the advent of this most talented band - A definite standout from the Norwegian scene along with Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon & Burzum.
Along with the furious guitar & lightning fast drumming there are some fantastic flourishes of keyboard to add the symphonics to the assault.
It's totally unique in sound - and this is the reason I've written this review. A fair few reviews (not just on amazon) often criticise the production - it's really not that bad at all! Every instrument (apart from perhaps the bass) & the vocals are clear, the snare & bass drum are fine & all the synths & sound fx are cleverly worked. Considering the modest budget & resources, an epic style sound was achieved. This is how Armageddon is going to sound!
