I am very new to Opeth (8 weeks). A Death Metal Drummer guy at work said 'try this mr prog rock!' So I did and WOW! I love a bit of cheesy prog truth be told but really love dirges a.k.a Pink Floyd (Animals being their best album in my opinion). But Opeth are something else and now that I have listened to every album many many times, all the time in fact, i think they have become my favorite band! How sad... I dont think i have ever heard a band that has produced so many great ideas per album and consistently created atmospheres worthy of Floyd and then some! The only thing I have a problem with is that I have been working with this guy for two years and he has only just showed me what I have been missing!

This is a good selection of pop songs...

But those seeking 'what the cure are really all about' should either by the albums or get join the dots (because some of those B-sides are amazing).
The Cure were about long atmospheric pieces of music which conjure up images in your head and evoke moods without even hearing the lyrics. When the lyrics do come they are usually delivered in a despairing hopeless way, or wailed, by Robert Smith and his masterfully unique voice, in the world of Pop/Rock.

Best songs suited for this are all the tracks on 'pornography', and charlotte sometimes, none of which included here.

Disintegration

A reviewer at the time of release said "Phew! there's not much room to breathe in here" and they were absolutely right.

The overall feel and sound of this recording is almost suffocating and that's a shame because this could have been a truly great Cure album. It's true to say that in many respects the Cure were going through the motions by this stage but Smith's musical talent had yet to vanish entirely.

Part of the problem is the production. It's stodgy. I don't think anybody but Smith had much say in it's recording. However, we do get great tracks like 'Lullaby' and 'Pictures Of You' that somehow escaped the midnight pillow of death.

This is just a fantastic album, with varying sounds and types of music. Expresses emotions ranging from anger to sadness, just a beautifully created album, I can't recommend this enough.

It's a shame in a way that nowadays this album seems to fit in with a vast amount of similarly aggressive and agonising music. On it's release it was the first of it's kind and to describe its impact as harrowing would be a serious understatement.

Seminal it undoubtably was but where other bands strive to achieve the same effect they fail because 'Pornography' is so sincere. Only Nirvana reached the level of outright desperation that brutally stabs out of this recording. But cacophony in itself is not enough. These are really great songs produced by a man who was driving himself way too hard.

In amongst the relentlessly attacking sound, evidence of a great songwriter emerges in moments of astonishing beauty. This is why the Cure's more recent releases fail. ... Read More:

i have decide to write a review that some think may cause offense but there is muppets out there (someone with a head up there ass!!!!!!! and moving there hands).

As like most people think if they hear/see a review like a well known band they a going to be like that band.

In many cases evanescence is like within temptation /lacuna coil /after forever /paramore and others just to name a few the only things these bands have in common is 2 things

1 They are in the music business

2 They are fronted by a female singer

and that is the only thing they have in common

Dark Passion Play: Special Edition

This was the first Nightwish I had heard - I read in many reviews about the last singer and how wonderful she was - personally I really like the sound of this one! I have since bought an earlier album and can't see what all the fuss was about, I could listen to Dark Passion Play over and over - in fact I do, but not the earlier stuff. I guess we all like different sounds, but for me, this album does it.

1992 must have been an unusual time to be in the Cure. After having released "Disintegration", a record that would eventually come to define the band, and having had to fight to get that album released, the world finally succumbed to the charms of the band. American success, hit singles, big tours, etc. However, in between 1989 and 1992, the entire musical climate had shifted, and the world into which "Wish" was released was very different from the times when "Disintegration" had appeared.
