What can I say about Volume One of the Nuggets compilation that hasn't already been said, this album after all is still one of the most important purchases I have ever made.
The cheap price tag of this collection on its own is quite frankly daft, but with the array of quality songs from relatively unknown bands being quite literally immense on this compilation, as a starting point you can't really do much better. So in short, you have no excuse, you need to have this compilation in your collection now.
Originally compiled and released in 1972 on the Sire Record label, by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman with help from Lenny Kaye, Nuggets is a superb gateway to the 1960's Psychedelic and Garage scenes. I play ... Read More:

I got this CD for Christmas on the basis that my wife must have seen it in my 'Items Recently Viewed' section on Amazon (good old Amazon!) and bought it for me as a stocking filler. Psychedelia is such a broad term - if I could define it then maybe I could write about music for a living - how exciting that would be! However all of the elements of quality 'psyche' are here for all - trippy lyrics, ethereal effects, fuzzy guitars, eastern elements - and here too we have the superb vocal skills of Dorothy Moskowitz. There is a lot of experimentation on this album (some great and very informative sleeve notes give a good background) but fortunately with the experiments come good tunes too. There is variation in styles and mood - dreamy, haunting ... Read More:

When this album hit the shops Pres.Kennedy had just been assasinated. As no one felt like celebrating-so they say-the album was a total flop and warehouses all over the country had 1000s of returned copies.
Understandably Spector was annoyed after all that work!
Probably the fact that the Singing Nun represented that years Christmas hit!
In 1964 the British Invasion which gave a boost to his career as the Ronettes toured the U K and the man came here to nob with the Stones and his British answer Andrew Loog Oldham who would prove beneficial.
as for the Beatles they would be his Saviour and by the early 70s both Harrison and Lennon had increased his bank balance considerably as well as his ego.Plus the fact that Apple had reissued the ... Read More:

I think the previous reviewer can't be that much of a music fan if they're surprised that a CD of Cajun music has some tracks in French! A cursory glance at the track listings ('Les Veuves De La Coulee' etc) might have given a bit of a hint.
I don't pretend to be any great authority on Cajun music but if you've heard one or two tracks and like the sound of it and want to find out more this CD is perfect as it includes a varied mix of different styles of tracks from slower waltzes to more up-tempo stomps, from such Cajun legends as the Balfa Brothers and Nathan Abshire.
To me it doesn't really matter whether you can understand the words - just sitback and let the warm, evocative sound of the Louisiana swamplands wash over you.

So far 9 Volumes and specials for Novelty,Country,Bubbling Under and even an extra called the Golden Age of Popular Music.
All highlights the hits and misses and include in the booklet chart positions in both America and the UK of the songs.More failed in this country that's if they were even released. But that was all about to change once the Beatles era began.
This review applies equally to everything-there's little point in providing info when its all been done in the booklets.
But I did notice one glaring ommission on a later volume which included Gabriel & the Angels "That's life"-which has no info against it.This was a Swan recording from 1963 and its unlikely to be the real Angels who were on the charts over the period 1962/4.How ... Read More:

There's no denying it, this album has everything for the discerning (and even the not-so-discerning) listener, from the classics that everyone should recognize, such as BTO's 'You ain't seen nothing yet', Thin Lizzy's 'The boys are back in town' (my personal favourite) and Steppenwolf's undeniably great 'Born to be wild', all the way up to the more modern classics, like G'n'R's 'Paradise City' and Stiltskin with 'Inside'. Even if you would never class yourself as a rock fan, this album has such an eclectic range of rock stylings, that there's bound to be something there that everyone will enjoy. You want something heavy? Try the Motorhead and Black Sabbath tracks at the end of disc one. You want something a bit lighter? Look no further than the excellent Genesis, ... Read More:

This is an excellent CD, featuring audio recordings of live performances by some of the finest strippers of recent years. Samantha Fox, Jo Guest, Maria Whittaker and many others are included here. Still, I can't help but feel that a visual element would have contributed to the overall atmosphere, so let's hope they re-issue this on DVD someday.
