The Black Album

To me, this was one of the best albums of 2003 (Speakerboxx/The Love Below won it for me). If you want to listen to hip-hop that steps outside of the box, this is definitely one you will like. While some tracks are better than others, there aren't really any that you will skip over straight away. Many albums have that (Kanye Graduation = Drunk and Hot Girls = Trash) so you've got to appreciate that Jay-Z put some thought into this instead of just filling the gap with generic tracks. Also this album has a HELL of a lot of highlights, including 'Public Service Announcement' (Which was meant to be an INTERLUDE!!!), and of course the well known 'Dirt Off Your Shoulders'. Since 1996, when he released his debut CD Reasonable Doubt, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, has been putting it down pretty much every year. My favorite tracks from "Reasonable Doubt" ended up being "Can I Live", "Can't Knock The Hustle" w/Mary J. Blige, "D'Evils" which was produced by DJ Premier, and "Brooklyn's Finest", a memorable collaboration between Jay-Z and the late, great Notorious BIG. 1997's "In My Lifetime Volume 1" was definitely influenced by Sean "Puffy" Combs with tracks like "Sunshine" and "I Know What Girls Like" w/Lil Kim, however, Jay-Z still managed to bring us some of the flavor from "Reasonable Doubt" with tracks like "Where I'm From", "Imaginary Player", "You Must Love Me", "Streets Is Watching" and "A Million & One Questions/Rhyme ... I thought someone needed to write a review having acutally listened to the album - so here goes.

If you have the slightest passing interest in any of the G-Unit members or Young Buck, or gangster rap in general - buy it.

From the opening homage to NWA, Straight Outta Southside, it's all good. No jokey candy-stick nonsense here, apart from the comedy "meeoow I need cash for my Kitty Kat" which just makes me smile every time I hear it!

Great beats, gangster lyrics and quality delivery (apart from the annoying vocoder on Rider Pt2).

It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

First bona fide Rap album I ever bought back in the late '80s. I confess, it was Thrash Metal veterans, Anthrax constantly banging on about them that convinced me!
Great album with perhaps the most intelligent lyrics ever written for a Rap cd - even though I don't agree with many of the opinions expressed, I respect them.
A production that was way ahead of the time, with great beats, basslines & samples, with a near perfect vocal balance between the intense and angry Chuck D and the more eccentric Flavor Flav. It's easy to see why this had appeal to the Metal crowd with it's heavy, urban tone, militaristic imagery and incendiary attitudes. There are some great tracks on here that obviously have been created by a musical genius. A fantastic album that to me is one of the best hip-hop/ rap albums i've ever heard. My favourite tracks that i'm still listening to 2 years after buying the album: Gone, My way home... Actually I listen to every track regularly theyre all great.

The 3rd World is good. Very good. Infact very, very good. I'm glad that I went to the trouble to get this imported from Viper Records. I was initially worried by the following 2 things: I'd heard that the beats weren't as good as Vol. 2. and I felt that Immortal could never make an album that could match the standard set by Vol. 2. But I can safely say that neither of these things are true. The beats are amazing and are the best that i've heard Tech spit over, complimenting him perfectly.

Lyric-wise Tech has really stepped his game up for this release, I can feel an intensification in the politicisation and raw energy of the album. He spits heat. There's a high level of consistency and flow throughout, so much so that Tech keeps you entranced from Track ... Read More:
