One thing that I found very interesting in this box set, was Jimi's unedited comment about surf music. Rather than the fashionable, "cool" attitude at the time which made the edited studio comment sound derogatory, the actual talk was positive. Don't forget, Keith Moon was a big fan of surf music, and, arguably, surf instrumentals were the "prog" of their day.

I bought this album after listening to (and really liking) Joe Satriani's 'Surfing with the Alien'. Before then I had not been very interested in purely instrumental music though I always appreciated great guitar playing. Having read about Jeff Beck many times in guitar magazines and hearing praise along the lines of him being 'the greatest living guitarist', I thought I was on to a winner. After all, these were the same sources that had introduced me to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eddie Van Halen, Buddy Guy and Mark Knopfler. So, I was surprised after trying hard to like it that I did not enjoy the album at all. I am also surprised that almost all negative reviews (site-wide) are found 'unhelpful' by readers. Personally, I find it very useful to find out ... Read More:

The only criticism of Jeff Beck's 1970s masterpieces -- BLOW BY BLOW and WIRED -- is the absence of his own compositions. Here, without George Martin or Narada Michael Walden, he has a go. You can't hate them, but there's little to love in these mediocre tunes. Track #5, for instance, is a virtual copy of anything from Terje Rypdal's 1977 opus, AFTER THE RAIN, but just 12 years late.
But like much of Bill Bruford's work of the 1980s, the biggest sin committed on this album is the electronic drum sound. I just can't believe this is the same Terry Bozzio who was so key to the success of Frank Zappa's ZOOT ALLURES and BONGO FURY. An incredible disappointment.
If you think you really might enjoy this album, the best way to acquire ... Read More:

Hendrix is able to show what he truly was made of in this recording. He uses his guitar like a weapon and is able to play tunes like no one can. This is a must buy for anyone who is into Hendrix and wants to own a piece of history.
