Although Janis Joplin's genius shines through all of these tracks, the selection is inadequate. An album with a title like greatest hits needs to contain Combination Of The Two (from Cheap Thrills, with Big Brother and the Holding Company) and Joplin's version of the Bee Gees' To Love Somebody (from Kozmic Blues).

Luckily there are more comprehensive compilations available, and this album would do as an introduction to the Joplin novice. It contains the impressive acid rock onslaught of Piece Of My Heart, the original version of the timeless Me And Bobby McGee (a huge posthumous hit for her in 1971), the wrenching Maybe from Kozmic Blues and her popular novelty song Mercedes Benz.

If this was the best of Clapton then there would be none of his albums in my collection. No surprise to see Phil Collins was involved, this is Clapton sans fire, sans soul, sans almost everything. Despite his inconsistent output he has produced some magical albums from Mayall onwards, be picky there are much much better albums than this MOR, corporate moneygrabber.

I've had this album for a long time, and recently revisited it, which included checking out some of the videos to be found on YouTube. I have to say there is some great stuff to be found here. As a long time fan of both Whitesnake and Led Zeppelin, it does seem as if DC and JP managed to combine their powers to good effect, even if that means ripping yourself off (see the lick for "Shake My Tree" and compare it to "Nobody's Fault But Mine"!). Page produces some superb stuff here, his best since Led Zep "Presence", particularly the solo on "Take Me For A Little While" and the riff to "Absolution Blues".

Another reviewer mentioned this album being a guilty pleasure, and I think that's spot on. If I have a reservation, it is that ... Read More:

I was very fortunate to have seen Rory live during his heyday and (as another reviewer has stated) I often felt he was far better live than in the studio and this album demonstrates that brilliance.

This album is worth the price for the brilliant "Walk on hot coals" alone, great song and what a fantastic guitar solo !

If you love full throttle blues, then get this album.

This is one great album that needs to be played loud.Jimi's guitar wails through all the songs and notably "Machine Gun" in which he brings forth the Vietnam War fought by the USA in Asia in in visual perspective but created by sounds from his unbelievable guitar-work.You can almost see the plane shot down by the machine gun as the pilot labours to keep the plane airborne as the engines have been hit.The engine finally dies as it hisses lifelessly despite the frantic efforts of the pilot to kick it back to life!Wow!What guitar work!No mortal man has ever played a guitar to the proficiency of the Gods as did Jimi Hendrix back then with mediocre technology. The woman in our local corner shop often has her Rod Stewart T-shirts on.
"Have you got the Jeff Beck albums yet?" I ask.
She smiles benignly as if to say; "Idiot! What would my Roddy be doing on a Jeff Beck album, I do wish he'd stop asking me that!"
Jeff Beck's first album after leaving The Yardbirds, and after enjoying (?) 2 or 3 chart singles on which HE took the lead vocals this album was an absolute blessing to hear; this was what we expected from a band fronted by him! And yes, regardless of my disbelieveing corner shop lady, her Roddy sings on all the original album tracks, and makes an especially fine job on every one of them, and would surprise quite a few of those disbeliever's in the process with 'Ol Man River' for starters.

For those not quite sure on whether or not Eric Clapton is for you, then this album is a good place to start. The eleven tracks on this album from the 70's are indeed some of Clapton's greatest moments despite being during his torrid drug and alcohol abusing days. This is a excellent introduction to Clapton and after listening to it you should know whether the rock/blues style of Clapton is for you. For those who already appreciate Clapton's genius and wish to have a comprehensive compilation album, then you may wish to give "The Cream of Clapton" a listen - it has 19 tracks, 8 more than this album. Forget heavy metal and led zepplin - Jeff has more balls in his little finger than all all the 'great' guitar players except than perhaps Jimi himself. Pure testosterone. The perfect driving music - no speed limit.

Jeff can change from thumping rock distortion to beautiful haunting bends and swoops - in pitch perfect highs and lows. Not to go through the tracks one by one - but this is Jeff hitting a high he has hinted at all his career. Never one to copy old riffs and cliches - he has been a unique talent ever since he picked up a 6 string. It's a change to see an artist not go down the commercial route just for the money.. No Frog Songs or Wonderful Tonights - just great guitar.
