Bluegrass music has seen an upsurge in popularity recently. Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Steve Earle, the O brother soundtrack and the various O sister compilations have all contributed. However, while some of that music is traditional, much of it is a modernised form of the music. Nothing wrong with that, of course - bluegrass, like every other form of music, must modernise or die, and some of it is pure magic - but this compilation draws on the roots of bluegrass, containing many old classics, especially from the fifties, sixties and seventies.

Ah, memories of the Harp Bar, Terry's reggae disco and meeting Jake Burns for the first time in the Crown. The punk music of Norn Iron was by far some of the best, the times it grew up in meant that the bands put more effort and themselves into the music (how else could Alternative Ulster have contained so much genuine anger). But it never got the large scale release it deserved (except SLF and the 'tones of course). The A&R guys must have been scared.

Now, the wider world has the chance to finally hear what we knew and loved in those good old, bad old times - this is by far and away the best of the plethora of Punk single compilations flying about these days. You never heard of some of the other GB bands or singles at the time ... Read More:

The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles Vol.2 1968-1971

This is the second instalment of the Stax story, although it is true to say that it represents the beginning of the story of Stax as an independant distributor of it's music.

To explain, pre'68, the labels output was licensed by Atlantic and when that deal ended, it was discovered that it gave Atlantic the rights to the Stax back catalogue - yes, all those classic tracks by the Soul greats, all unavailable to Stax. So, the label embarked on a new strategy with a new logo. Gone was the pale blue label, with the black discs at the top and in came that vibrant yellow with the famous "finger-clicking" logo.

What's not to love about this "record" of the legendary 'Stiffs Live Stiffs' back in 1978 - 5 acts of vastly different styles and experience thrown together on a bus in a 50's style package show. Nick Lowe had a band featuring guitarist Dave Edmunds on drums, and Elvis Costello's drummer Pete Thomas on guitar whilst Wreckless Eric had Ian Dury on drums & fellow Blockhead Davey Payne on sax. The policy of rotating the acts each night was soon abandoned to leave the emerging & acknowledged stars of the tour, Ian Dury, and Elvis Costello to engage in alternate nights of headlining, and escalating degrees of trying to upstage each other - which all made for tremendous entertainment!
