Piano Man The Very Best of Billy Joel could only be regarded as the very best by customers who are pleased that the title track has been butchered and a great chunk of its middle removed. The rest of us might feel Sony BMG Music Entertainment should be ashamed of a shabby deception. If it's legal to sell only part of a song without making it plain that's what you're doing, then it shouldn't be. Prospective buyers who want to hear Joel sing about the real-estate novelist and Davy who's still in the Navy should check the jacket and ensure the song lasts for 5 ½ minutes, not 4 ½.

Songs of Leonard Cohen

My introduction to Leonard Cohen was on a vinyl CBS sampler which included "Sisters of Mercy". On the basis of that track I bought "Songs of Leonard Cohen" (on vinyl) and many subsequent albums.
As has been said before I think that this album is probably Cohen's strongest overall - there are other gems on many of his albums but no other album contains so many songs which have stood the test of time.
'Suzanne' (and 'Bird on a wire' from 'Songs from a Room') were even covered by Fairport Convention - a band not noted for a shortage of self-penned material.
I tend to disagree with the reviewers who think Cohen is the best interpreter of his music; perhaps at times but generally his voice is the penalty paid for the pleasure of the ... Read More:

1967-1970 : The Blue Album

This was the 2d album I ever bought (see my 1962-66 review), and I loved playing both sets. However, as I collected the original albums, these became somewhat superfluous: the Beatles albums are so good they outrank virtually any other band's 'best of', and you can get the singles on Magical Mystery Tour and Past Masters 2.
The band were producing their most ambitious music and the selection represents a lot of this, although why Don't Let Me Down and Old Brown Shoe are here I don't know; they were released as B sides, so it gave them to 1973 collectors on album, but (on the same principle) you can get them on Past Masters 2 (and plenty of 1963-6 single / EP tracks weren't on the companion 'Red' album..).

i was walking through the streets of a small dutch town (either venlo or eindhoven) at the height of my obsession with this group, full of their music and images of the girls, next to my parents looking for something for my birthday, blissfully unaware that this was out.

Arrival had blown me away and the emotional response was just beginning to dwindle. so imagine hoe i felt as i walked past a record shop with the whole window deicated to this release; choc full of pos. in an instant i knew thats wanted i wanted (fuuny too, i was 13 on friday 13th jan 1978).

forget the (with hindsight) lame (but at the time awesome) film, this stand alone album is the groups finest. i cherish it to this day and it would still make my top 10.

If you actually like paying for what are little more than sound effects masquerading as tracks, then get this soundtrack. For example: Banister Fight - RZA; Flip Sting; Sword Swings - Luis Bacalov;Axe Throws - Bernard Herrmann.

For those wanting to get a true Kill Bill soundtrack, with all the movie music included, you will be disappointed to hear that the following tracks are ABSENT from this soundtrack or are totally unrecogniseable from the movie version:

'Nobody But Me - The Human Beinz' - absent;
'Seven Notes In Black - Vince Tempera' (this is the music playing as Kiddo is about to slash Buck, but is heavily rapped over by RZA or whoever he is);
'Long Day Of Vengeance - Armando Travajoli' - absent;

This is not their best album, worth listening to, definitely. I would urge you to buy it but if it's a choice of different muse albums go for Black Holes and Revelations. Very good lyrics and the songwriting is upto scratch as usual. Still very good.

Diamond Hoo Ha

Supergrass have been producing consistently excellent for years and only a couple of listens will tell you this is pretty much as good any of their previous efforts. This marks album marks a return to the more energetic sound of their past albums, following the more mellow and mature Road To Rouen.

The two openers - Diamond Ho Ha Man and Bad Blood are both catchy and entertaining setting up the album perfectly. But things get better with Rebel In You which is infectiously bouncy and upbeat. When I Needed You is a darker affair and probably as Road To Rouen as you're going to get here. Some good rocky tracks are then followed by Ghost Of A Friend which is a catchy sixties-influenced number. Whiskey And Green Tea sees the silly side of Supergrass re-emerge and is very ...
