This is a great record of undefinable trips into blues and folk with a jazz vibe at times.
Great guitar playing, great singing, great songs and an almost mesmerising laid back atmosphere.
Nothing else I have heard by John Martyn touches this.
I love to hear a record where a musician so clearly says "this is my sound, and it isn't like anyone else"
He shies away from the "hey nonny nonny" of Pentangle etc and produces a genre-defying piece of brilliance which could sit equally in the folk or blues camps.
This is great music - it just remains for you to buy it immediately at this bargain price.

Containing none of their most famous hits, 'Katy Lied' is nevertheless Steely Dan's most gorgeous collection of songs. There is perhaps less invention and more commercialism in the music, but this is deceptive, for the invention is in the writing. 'Bad Sneakers' features attention-grabbing twists in both music and lyrics, as does the lovely 'Doctor Wu', though, like many of the band's songs, its meaning is elusive. The opening image of suicide on the strident 'Black Friday,' by contrast, is stark. 'Everyone's Gone To The Movies' shows them in buoyant mood. One of the strokes they pull off here is the low-key sinister melody on vibes that lies beneath the jaunty main theme. 'Your Gold Teeth II' points the way toward their jazzier moments. Every track on here ... Read More:

I've been a fan of Aimee Mann since "Whatever", and along with Lost In Space, it's still one of my favourite Mann albums. This one has taken time to grow on me. All the trademarks are there, the beautiful and warm alto, the witty world-weary obervations, lovely productions.
I would say that my favourite tracks here are Freeway, very radio friendly, the moving honesty of 31 Today, Phoenix - "you love me like a dollar bill, you roll me up and trade me in", and It's Over, a beautiful lilting 3/4 string-laiden ballad. The lyrics are often beguiling to the point where it's not always clear whether these are mere stories, or whether the lyrics are drawn from personal experience, I suspect possibly both. There are a handful of songs which I find it difficult ... Read More:

The CD has all the main hits (pre Astronaut) plus a few lesser known hits. Some songs are edited versions so if that is an issue, beware. This is especially evident on the Rio tracks and Ordinary World. For most people, though, these are the versions they know having heard them on the radio for 20+ years. I could say that such and such song should have been included (OK, Violence of Summer) but can not find any real fault in the selection. The sound quality is fine which should not be a surprise; the sound quality of DD was always top class.

My son knowing I am and always will be a huge Clapton fan, bought this for my last birthday (I don't mean my LAST bithday, I am hoping to have many more!) I would not have gone and purchased this myself, as within my CD collection I have all of these tracks and could have made up this compilation myself. Having said that it is a good collection (how many Clapton collections have there been over the years?). The two discs represent a reasonable selection of the mans work, although I would have liked some of his early stuff with John Mayall and even The Yardbirds, perhaps Blind Faith, just to round the collection out. I played it in the car and it is a great driving companion, even though I know all the tracks well, thay are great songs and just remind you once again what ... Read More:

A fine collection of songs performed with class and elegance - as you would expect from B.M. A few words of caution however to those for whom audio quality is important. Although not mentioned on the sleeve notes, this compilation has been re-mastered, and in no small way.
There must be few sound engineers who continue clumsily plying their trade after the onset of profound tinnitus, but a listen to this CD suggests that there is somewhere, at least one determined but ill-advised sufferer.
Each track on this disc has identical heavy compression applied to the sibilant frequencies of the vocal range, pretty much eliminating the natural dynamics and obliterating the nuances of light and shade in B.M.'s capable voice. As an added bonus, this turns those cymbals ... Read More:

Hotter than July, is never really acknowledged, in despite of the achievements that Wonder managed to do with it. The album was the best selling of his career to that point and Dr Martin Luther King Jr was granted a national holiday on 26th January 1986 after his plea in the song "Happy Birthday"
Wonder promotes diversity, peace (Master Jammin'-a tribute to Bob Marley's reggae style); anger ("I ain't gonna stand for it"); politics ("Cash in your hand"), love ("All i do" and "Rocket Love") and influence ("Happy Birthday"- the song now even appears in real birthday cards, despite being written as a tribute to the civic rights work by Dr Martin Luther King Jr.)

There are a lot of reviews on this album, time and time again Nevermind seems to stretch its fuzzy head and look over, all I can say is ,to me Nevermind has some good tracks and Ten has some brilliant. its impossible to even compare them with each other, a bit like saying Grand Funk Railroad ( early years ) were like the Mahavishnu orchestra. total difference Pearl Jam are a clever group of musicians who write play and express themselves perfectly, the Nevermind crew had a few catchy riffs.

I have just bought this reissued and expanded album. Room to Roam had always been my least favourite Waterboys album but I have really enjoyed this. I have played and played raggle Taggle Gypsy Live version till my family have threatened me with sharp implements.
If you liked this first time round you'll love it this time; if you didn't you may just surprise yourself. If you've never heard it before, give it a go. If you are new to Waterboys probably try This is the Sea or Fishermans Blues first
