Suffers from the problem of many recent world music offerings that they water down what made the artist interesting in the first place... Do we need Irish singing alongside Babba Maal's vocals? No thank you Mr Producer. Please stop it. When everyone else stops interfering, as on the slow tracks at the end of the album, some of the true talent of Baaba Maal can be heard. Too late to save the album

lovely album from the kora maestro from Mali.

the sheer intricacy and timing that Diabate applies to playing the kora (a type of African instrument most closely resembling a harp) is hard to comprehend if you haven't seen him playing it live as i did recently.

he also applies his craft to some wonderful pieces of music

he's accompanied on this album by some marvellous but minimal additional instrumentation, this is the perfect music to accompany your most relaxing and reflective moods

Makeba first achieved international fame with her hit Pata Pata in the 1960s. This set of beautiful and varied songs highlights the South African singer's exceptional voice. The title track is a great ballad, whilst Ndiarabi is a funky number with buoyant rhythms and powerful vocals. Other great tracks include the exile's lament I Long To Return, Bambarana, My People and the evocative Serenade Me. There is a very short number called Good Grunge that sounds like a happy jamming session, and the album concludes with the French song Prendre Un Enfant. Miriam Makeba or Mama Afrika as she is affectionately known, is one of South Africa's greatest female vocalists who has consistently produced quality work over five decades.
