on my cd player, the bass on this CD ( and I tried two CDs of this recording) emerge as big clouds of static which make listening very unpleasant. I tried Vinicius C's CDs Silva, and Horse and Fish, same thing. This is the first time I've encountered this problem with CDs and I own close to a thousand CDs. It must be some quirky thing with Vinicius' recordings.

Konono No.1 are an Africa collective originating from the border area between Congo and Angola. Featuring likembe (or thumb-piano), percussion and vocals, they draw on the Bazombo tradition of trance music, and in their mission to bring this music to urban environments, they found themselves the inadvertent innovators of a new sound. When playing on the noisy streets of an African city, amplification is required to make oneself heard, and so Mingiedi and his associates built themselves a makeshift soundsystem constructed from discarded materials. Cesaria Evora is one of the great stars of world music, and this CD is on many lists as an "essential recording" in this genre. Born in 1941 in Sao Vicente (Cape Verde Islands), Cesaria has known the toughest of times in her youth, and was a mature woman before reaching the recognition she so richly deserved. "Mis Perfumado" was recorded in 1992, and is one of her very finest albums; with her soft, warm honey voice, and a heart well acquainted with the sorrow of lost love, she is undoubtedly the quintessential interpreter of "morna", a style of song reminiscent of the Portuguese fado combined with the rhythms of West Africa.

bought this about 5 yrs ago, & its made my interest spiral. even takin up arabic lang lessons. some of the singers r translating for that so i can hear the Anglo in the word pronounciations in some of the songs. other than that im in it for the MUSIC not petty things. Track 1 tells u go get up & dance (or tap ur feet if ur in public. lol) LOADS of the other tracks do the same. only 1 or two make me skip. MUST HAVE.
