an absolute must for me, with dazzling guitar flamenco which any player will be stunned by, and the instantly recognisable double bass of the best player ever Danny Thompson...combined with Kora player Toumani Diabate.. this is a stunning collection of tracks with energy to spare..have had this album on cassette for years and worn it out in various cars,,, but really must get it on CD now that time and cars have moved on.. ha ha...fabulous mix of african and spanish music with energetic rythyms and that authentic 'cafe' atmosphere...if you listen to Noches en Vela on the Nitin Sawhney CD Philtre that also is an example of the type of music you can hear on this work.. it transports you to a high energy spain/africa mix that lifts moods and sparks ... This is a wondeful, feel good album, combining Abdullah Ibrahim's jazz discipline with the irresistable lilt and melody of the South African townships. Packed with beautful saxophone and timeless catchy breaks, the tracks here just get into that essential groove and float all over you.
Best of the bunch is "Mannenberg Is Where It's Happening". These days Mannenberg is a violent, gang-blighted wasteland, but this music suggests that sometime back in its history, it was "happening". Thank Heaven for that. because this is a fourteen minute peice of magic. "Ntyilo Ntyilo" is similarly sublime, as is "Little Boy" and "Black and Brown Cherries". This CD says it has a copy protection system on it but I was able to load it into iTunes, so perhaps it's a watered down version.

I hate dancing, and never buy "dance" music. This is also a great pop record full of memorable tunes and quality arrangements. It's a world music festival on a disc, and even if you find some world music hard work, there nothing not to like here. It's all fresh, fun, poppy and accessible.

Why this Ethiopian pianist slipped over everyone's heads is beyond me. This batch of recordings from nun Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou showcases some of the most touching instrumentals ever written. After the first few tracks, you will realise you have already been ushered closer into her life story and it is hard to finish listening to the CD without being at one point stunned into complete and utter silence, not even daring to move.

This is the music that originally earnt Youssou N'Dour international attention & celebrity. Many of his admirers, myself included, see this as his golden period before he attracted Peter Gabriel's attention & influence. I can still remember going to Senegalese student/immigrant parties in France, in the 1980's, & the highlight of those nights was always when the title track of this album was played, the dancing became even more superb, & the emotion of those "Immigres" was palpable. Senegal has long been respected for her musical heritage & this album was a landmark in it.
