How do you make an uplifting opera out of a group of exhausted, demoralised, malnourished prisoners stuck in the Nineteenth Century equivalent of a Stalinist Gulag? Let Janacek show you how.
This is a piece where practically nothing happens. A new prisoner arrives, there's a bit of aimless brutality, the prisoners put on a ramshackle show, a caged eagle is given its (symbolic) freedom and...er...that's about it. The most interesting action happens in a series of long narratives, life-stories told by prisoners to while away the endless time spent in this hellhole.
Yet this is throughout edge-of-the-seat stuff. Janacek, in the last opera of his Indian Summer, uniquely captures that 'spark of humanity' to be found in ... Read More:

I went to my first Ex Cathedra concert in December 2001 knowing only a little about the choir. I was totally blown away by the undisputable talent of every individual participating and refused to come away without some recording of their music. The choir consists of 'non professional' musicians, brought together by the impecable conductor Jeffrey Skidmore. The harmonies, the timing and the technical difficulties of some of the pieces are managed incredibly well and made to sound remarkably easy. To any choral music lover, or indeed to anyone who wants to add to their christmas selection something a little bit different, I would recommend not to miss out on this one.

This is an enjoyable compilation to listen to (some children's CD's have very dull singing or poor musical accompaniment). I use this (and the original My First Album CD) as background music in the morning whilst my one year old has a little play and gets up and dressed. I can understand why the other reviews say it is too fast to sing along to, so don't try to! However, it can help you to brush up on the lyrics / tune so that you can sing with baby at your own pace. The last few tracks are a bit disappointing as they are spoken rather than sang. The DVD is OK, but as with My First Album consider it an add on rather than anything too absorbing - not a patch on Baby Einstein in the "keeping baby amused" stakes!

This delightful CD has become a favourite evening tranquilizer for mum and dad, as well as baby. The soft but rhythmic melodies sung in happy, gentle Brazilian Portugese seem to massage the temples and send us all off into peaceful slumber with up-turned mouths. We've even learnt some of the words and are on the way to teaching our baby son to count to a hundred sheep in Portuguese! I couldn't recommend this CD enough.Zzzzzzz.
