The Little Mermaid

I was lucky enough to see the musical in New York in October and bought the soundtrack there. The music really is the best thing about it, new catchy songs have been added and are all as good as the originals that feature in the film.

Sherie Rene Scott in particular who plays the villain Ursula really stands out on the soundtrack, her version of 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' is better than that of the film version and she also has a few more songs in the soundtrack that have been added to the musical but were not in the film.

Overall, a fantastic soundtrack worthy of any cast recording collection and Mermaid or Disney fans in particular will love it.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 5 star album displaying once again Menken's talents. The music can be enjoyed by child fans of the movie and adult music lovers, although I feel some messages in the songs are too heavy for young children. The music has a catholic choral style (as some is in latin) as well as a gypsy bohemian theme contrasting. 'Hell fire' is a passionate song of lust with a heavy theme on the morals surrounding gypsys, witchcraft, church and the law. But the right message is sent out in the ballad 'God help the outcasts'. The music brilliantly describes the time and feel of Victor Hugo's epic novel with a touch of comedy in the talking gargoyles. This c.d is fabulous!

I bought this soundtrack just on impulse, and also to get the amount needed for free post and packing. And I have to say, I do not regret it. I have listened to this constantly ever since I got it. I had already got The Lion King cast recording, and it is one of my favourite Disney soundtracks ever. Beauty and the Beast is certainly another one at the top of the pile! It is a completely different style of music to Lion King, but just as good! I definitely recommend it!

I ordered this recording the other week. Disney is known for its award-winning soundtracks anyway (or it used to be until the 90s), but the soundtrack for The Little Mermaid has to be their best work. It's Alan Menken at his best.
Jodi Benson is absolutely gorgeous as Ariel. The most memorable songs have to be 'Part of Your World', 'Part of Your World Reprise' and 'Under the Sea'.
This may be obvious to some people, but the songs on this soundtrack are meant to stand by themselves, i.e. certain dialogues that are part of the songs in the movie may be missing here.
CD 1 definitely gets 5 stars from me!

If you like Elvis this soundtrack is great. The only bad thing on it is one of the cover versions on it that sounds pretty awful. The two songs done by the choir are fantastic and really uplifting.

Regardless of what previous people have said I doubt very much that Elvis is trying to promote this CD for himself seeing as he is dead.
