I first got into Patty Griffin by reading something that Emmylou Harris had said - words to the effect that she was one of Emmylou's favourite singers. I thought that if that was the case then Patty Griffin would be something very special. I wasn't wrong.

This is Patty's most ambitious album to date, no question. The album flows through so many styles - Jazz, Blues, Country, Ballad, Alternative (and that's just for openers). Some of the songs hit straight away (Stand on the Ride, Burgundy Shoes, Someone Else's Tomorrow) others are real growers (Trapeze, Railroad Wings). And, right at the heart of it is this voice - this unimaginably amazing voice - leading the band through the songs.

Her best album so far...

I bought this cd for my little girl who is one and a half years old and likes to dance .... having heard it twice she immediately recognises it now every time i take it out to play, and she swings her arms and stomps her feet and sings away (in her own way!). Her favourite one is OATS AND BEANS AND BARLEY!!
Its a great cd, highly recommended!!!!!

I bought this cd for my little girl who is one and a half years old and likes to dance .... having heard it twice she immediately recognises it now every time i take it out to play, and she swings her arms and stomps her feet and sings away (in her own way!). Tippett - A Child of Our Time

The late Sir Michael Tippett was a lifelong pacifist who served a brief sentence during World War II as a conscientious objector. He wrote 'A Child of Our Time' early in WW II and he wrote the text for it himself after T. S. Eliot, whom he had asked to supply the libretto, told him that Tippett's own outline was sufficient to the task. The narrative of the cantata is about a Polish boy living with relatives in France after his parents had been killed by the Nazis who himself then shot and killed a German official in 1938. He was imprisoned by the French government but that apparently wasn't punishment enough; in reprisal for the act the Nazis carried out the horrific 'Kristallnacht.' Thought this was a lovely idea for a children's CD, with great songs (and slightly 'different' from the norm) from around the world. I was really disappointed in the never-ending introductions and unconstructive 'chatter' before every single song, though, making it completely useless as a bedtime CD or even a nice 'music' CD, since it's all turned into a kind of lesson and once listened to my kids couldn't be bothered listening to it again as it was boring second time around and rather pointless. Very disappointing as the idea was super.

I love this album. Tracey Thorn is one of the very best of British female singers, but this is the only EBTG collection where the songs really do justice to the voice. I have tried and tried with the other albums but cannot get past even a couple of tracks, but this is suburb throughout. You will listen to this again and again.

I've been playing this cd every day since I was six months pregnant and my son is now six months old, and both of us are still enjoying it, so that's a testament to how good it is. As a musician myself, I'm fussy about what I listen to, but unlike the usual mozart cds, they've gone to an effort to find an interesting choice of (mostly) less well known pieces, which are well-arranged so that there aren't any jarring changes of key from one piece to the next, and most of the performances are really fine, so that the whole effect is, indeed, very, very soothing and soporific. I play this at night and find it very helpful for getting my son off to sleep, but you could also use it as general relaxation music to de-stress to in pregnancy.
