Nora Guthrie, of the Woody Guthrie Archive, first approached Billy Bragg in 1995 with the idea of him writing music for and recording some of the lyrics Woody had written after the Huntington's disease had preventing him from holding, never mind playing, his guitar. The rational behind Billy's suitability seems sensible, singer-songwriter following the folk tradition which, although English, has been passed on to him from Woody Guthrie via Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Playing the folk festivals with Woody's own apprentices such as Pete Seeger would make him familiar with Woody's history without the necessity to idolise him as some of his contemporise would.
Billy then invited Americano Rockers Wilco to join the party possibly to give ... Read More:

After a lot of years searching for the perfect sound, the one that captured in every facet my own very personalised image of America, I came across Jim White's debut album, 'Wrong Eyed Jesus' and I knew that I had found it. The album resonates with more than just the sound of the south but with echoes of its soul as well. Tales of love and lost love, abandonment, searching and redemption flow seamlessly through each track, the lyrics dripping with a home spun religious revivalism that wouldn't fail to grip a die hard atheist. That Jim White knows of what he speaks you never doubt, an act of faith at one with the tales of the same contained within.
The album fits perfectly into the 'Southern Gothic' niche, although is far more tuneful ... Read More:

This is a charming album of simple and heartfelt songs, mostly gentle but intimately powerful. I found the approach thoroughly engaging, with sparse production and instrumentation complementing the lyrics and Lucinda's vocals. The simplicity of 'Mama you Sweet' (with one very long verse) draws you in to the emotion of the song. 'Are You Alright' and 'Where is my Love' are great, beautiful songs and Jenny Scheinman's expressive violin adds a unique layer to the arrangements.
I thought some of the songs could have been shorter, and that the CD might have been better with a few tracks omitted. The album isn't full of instant hits but reveals itself over time, and is well worth taking the time to get to know it.
Release Date January 13, 2003
I have read some of the knowledgeable and wordy reviews on this album. I would only add 'SIMPLY THE BEST' from EmmyLou. Every track should be listened to every time you place it on the CD player tray. Simply top quality.

First heard this band when maybe as long as 10 years ago "Weightless Again" appeared on a music magazines "New Country" compilation. Since that time I've bought their back catalogue and each new album. I now have all their recordings.
Where does this album rank? ..., well IMO it's their best to date & a triumphant return to form after the disappointing "Twilight".
The only Handsome Family albums that don't deserve 5 stars are Twilight, Odessa , Milk and Scissors. If it were possible to give 5+ stars (a platinum merit award) then "Last Days of Wonder" would get it.

This album, in its original vinyl form, was my first full bluegrass album. It starts impressively with the up-tempo title track and maintains a high standard throughout the original album. I replaced my vinyl with CD, since when Rhino have re-mastered it and added two bonus tracks (You're gonna change, Root like a rose) that I'm told are good but not bluegrass. In any case, this album is well worth it for the original ten tracks.
Wayfaring stranger, a traditional song, became a top ten country hit and ensured the success of the album against record company expectations. This was 1980, remember, when Kenny Rogers was the biggest name in country music and the Urban Cowboy craze was at its height. I love Kenny's music and the Urban Cowboy soundtrack, but there are many different ... Read More:

I bought this after reading a review. It is a superb set of music with hard and soft edges too it.On the outer edges of country it has a feel to it which is a bit like some of the earlier Eagles stuuff mixed with Allman Bros and other Southern American rock acts.I would recommend it as I have listened to it several times now and it just grows and grows on you and is a fantastic album.
