First listened to Kaseys latest album Wayward Angel and had to buy her previous CDs. Totally bowled over with Wayward Angel and this one is no exception, absolutely brilliant; expecting The Captain to come shortly. Hopefully she will start to get the recognition she truly deserves.

Can't believe no-one else has bothered to review this so thought i'd do it!
Probaby the best Jayhawks album, fantastic harmonies, great uplifting lyrics and fine musicianship make this Alt countryRock album a great feel good album.
The Jayhawks offically split this year (06) but key songwriters Olsen and Louris have been touring as a duo with the promise of an album and i for one based on this album, can't wait!

Patterson Hood of the DBT reckons this is the weakest of all their records. I'd say there isn't such a thing. They're just different. Gorgeous pedal steel from John Neff as always and sweet songwriting from Hood in particular contribute to this excellent debut effort.

when i first bought it i used to play it all time. what toppled it from that position was the fact i listened to couple of neil young albums like 'silver and gold' and 'harvest'.although they could not compete in the tunes department they seemed to have more feeling. so i stopped listening for a while but recently i have fallen in love with it again. the first five tracks flow into one another like few other albums. some of the songs are heartbreakingly honest like 'all my life'. every word in that song is true. best time to listen to that song is in a room full of stuff you bought and did not need as well as having done something you did not need to do. i think it is a futur classic

Not what you'd call a cheery collection of songs.... Mary has been well promoted up here in the North on Radio Scotland (under the Alternative Country / Americana labeling). The material is good and having lived in the deep south of the states I can equate to a lot of the songs.
Its very down beat country, great voice AND the kids hate her. She can drive teenagers out of a room in 30 seconds flat (very useful).
Quote from no.2 son - she's Sh&t.

The Thorns is a one off (so far) musical collaboration between the powerpop inspired Mathew Sweet and the rock/country leanings of Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge. All three are much undervalued American songsmiths who share a love of classic songwriting and vocal harmonies - think Crosby Stills & Nash, Beatles, Eagles, Simon & Garfunkle and even Crowded House. It's a record full of wonderfully melodic songs, fully realised accoustic arrangements and soaring 3 and 4 part vocal accrobatics. Thankfully the self penned material more than matches the peerless execution.
Tom Petty is an obvious influence on catchy opener 'Runaway Feeling' and the poppy 'Such A Shame', whilst it's the Fab Four all the way on the terrific 'I Can't Remember'. 'No Blue Skies' ... Read More:

A great album. A lot more varied in subject matter than their first album 'So much for the City'.
This is a favorite album of mine, more so than their first. This is somehow more polished, still nice and angsty, more flexible, shows the talent of the musicians to a better extent. Lead vocals seem so good. Writing has taken a different turn too, and i prefer their usage of lyrics this to their first album.
If i had to advise you? Get all 3 albums. You won't be disappointed!!!!

I really wasn't too sure what to expect from this, handed to me by a friend, but it's totally got me! I've listened to this album an embarrassing amount of times, with equal pleasure.... Genuine, delightfully unironic, heartfelt, damn good get-you-going music and an excellent soundtrack to pretty much any hardship one might encounter in life (especially the broken heart variety). Dolly will see you through! Solid quality music-wise, of course.

One other reviewer commented on the lack of writing credits on this title - and I agree - it's astonishing that there isn't any - nor even a booklet supplied. The CD is housed in a card gatefold digipak and the inner flap lists production credits (Ryan Adams) and recording venues, a list of the band who played on it (The Cardinals) and some other minor details on Addtional participants - and that's it! No lyrics! No idea of who wrote what or why!
In order to straighten this out, the following should help:
1. Rainy Day Blues (Willie Nelson)
2. Songbird (Fleetwood Mac cover, originally on Rumours (1977) but also closely associated with Eva Cassidy)
3. Blue Hotel (written by Ryan Adams, a STUNNER, played live with the Cardinals on the recent BBC Sessions) ... Read More:
