Silver Mountain is the first album release by this Detroit-based group, although they have been together since 2002.
The album opens with the foot-stomping, thigh-slapping, hoedown-ing "Ain't No Hidin' Love" and just gets better the longer you listen. Their sound is akin to the Rolling Stones "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Honky Tonk Woman" shaken with The Eagles, and smashed back - straight up no ice.
Silver Mountain delivers on all levels, whether it be a rock ballad "If You Want Me To" or the hard rockin' "Queen of the Scene". A superb album. Listen with a bottle of whiskey. You need this music.

This must be about tenth unfamiliar artist whose CD I've bought on the basis of numerous gushing Amazon reviews who then turned out to be ordinary or even flat-out dull. There's nothing here folks. The songs are banal, expressed in lifeless (and often broken) verse, backed by forgettable melodies that are executed in little more than strumming. Booooring. The only reason this gets even two stars from me is because it isn't copy-protected in a way that makes it unplayable on most of my CD-players.

A fantastic piece of work by Idlewild's frontman. In my opinion Woomble is one of the finest lyricists of his generation, his words a works of poetry in their own right and always seem to capture the mood of the song perfectly. Stand out tracks here are 'My secret is my silence' and 'Waverley Steps'. This is a must buy for fans Idlewild and people who like romance and melancholy.

Kasey Chambers is a wonderful singer/songwriter - her debut (The Captain) is a 5 star delight and while her other albums fail to reach the heights of her debut they are all still good, solid albums adding folk, blues and rock to the country mix.
This album, however is very different, it's a good (bad) old fashioned run-of-the-mill country album.
Now this will appeal to many as the songs aren't bad, the production and musicianship is, as always, excellent - I'm just not a big fan of country music.
So beware, this album is not the Kasey Chambers you may know and love - it's a country album - which is a shame, especially as the title track sounds like Kasey of old and hints at what could have been achieved with ... Read More:

Steve Earle manages to mix politics with good music on this album. A couple of the tracks are a bit heavy going for me i.e The Warrior and Gringo's Tale but there is plenty else to enjoy. Rich Man's war is a beautifully written song with a strong poignant lyric. I liked the depiction of the naivete of the suicide bomber driven to his destination by a 'fat man in a new Mercedes' and I was glad it wasn't politically one-sided. Home to Houston is a good rockabilly tune about being in Iraq. The Revolution Starts Now is an upbeat song about how the 'revolution' of thinking for yourself starts in your street and in your town. I initially thought the swearing in FtheFCC was juvenile but think this presents the feelings and ... Read More:

In a year when Wilco failed to deliver with the bland Sky Blue Sky, RF came along and provided the salvation with, imho, the best album of 2007. Willy's stories are as lucid and plaintive as ever, but it's the musical arrangement which makes this a truly outstanding effort as it compliments each desperate and broken refrain perfectly. It's a long time since I listened to an album and found myself knowing all the words to heart, but this is how these songs creep up on you. Since then I've invested in RF's back catalogue (yep - i've come late to the party!), and although Post to Wire and the Fitzgerald are themselves deserving of 5 stars, Thirteen Cities remains the beautiful and stark beacon that the likes of Wilco - and even RF - will be measured against.

I wasn't aware of the original but i enjoyed listening to this album. Mellow and well produced with top drawer performers. You don't have to have knowledge of the original to appreciate the performances here.

I really wasn't too sure what to expect from this, handed to me by a friend, but it's totally got me! I've listened to this album an embarrassing amount of times, with equal pleasure.... Genuine, delightfully unironic, heartfelt, damn good get-you-going music and an excellent soundtrack to pretty much any hardship one might encounter in life (especially the broken heart variety). Dolly will see you through! Solid quality music-wise, of course.

Buying recorded music on spec - even, and sometimes especially, on recommendation - is an activity which guarantees frequent disappointment among the occasional blazing revelation. This record is one of those elusive revelations. It's so good, in fact, that for some time I held off purchasing anything else by DBT. As they say in the final track, "The secret of a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits; better roll `em now before anything else goes wrong." Having moved on to buy The Dirty South, I'm now happy that A Blessing and a Curse is not just a one-off.
The style dwells somewhere in the slash in country/rock and there are several influences apparent - Crazy Horse, some Allman Brothers-like guitar, a little bit of Wilco (not too much, don't want ... Read More:
