This is perfect for those long night drives. Three years later, its still a staggeringly good CD that you just dont get bored of.
A Massive artistic achievement, in a class of its own.

I'm going to be brief with this review - I think i've ranted too much over the past few months with MoS albums!
Basically, I bought this album after listening to it at my friends house. I had completely forgotten about it being released, as I had previously dismissed it for being just 'another' album. However, after seeing it was mixed by the old legends themselves, I decided to give it a go.
I can say now that this is probably the best MoS album in years, which is saying alot listening to the other rubbish they release - all with 'new' material. As a DJ myself, it was great to see that The Annual 2008 is a much better effort, but what's missing? The quality of mixing, present on this album.

An album full of beautiful tracks full of many instruments. I have never heard anything like this - Sufjan Stevens takes instruments we have become accustomed to hearing in certain genres, and uses them to create fantastic, rich sounds. The subject matters of the songs are covered from a childlike, frank perspective. Listening to this has set me on the hunt for his other albums...

I lost track of ambient sometime in the mid nineties. Positive reviews and the relatively low price made me try this one out and it cannot be faulted. "Golden era" Aphex spring to mind (ie both Ambient Works albums) . Like the best Ambient it envelops your entire being when listening to it as time becomes irrelevant. I cannot now imagine living without it. Each album has a tone to it whilst all link together as an inspirational piece of work. Words fail me.... buy while you can as this will be treasured as a work of genius in years to come.

The fledgling Virgin label signed two important German bands in the early 70s: Faust and Tangerine Dream. First, they released The Faust Tapes album, a collection of studio experiments and outtakes, in a Bridget Riley sleeve for only 50p (the price of a single in those days: very tempting to a schoolboy prog-rocker, I can tell you). Then along came Phaedra. Both showed aspects of so-called "krautrock" that were very different to the melodic pop of Kraftwerk, who were enjoying their 15 minutes of fame at that time courtesy of their "Autobahn" single riding high in the charts. Phaedra and TFT combined electronics (largely homemade, in Faust's case) with white noise, tape effects and elements of musique concrete, to often disconcerting and at times frightening ... If someone had told me this album were some lost Sid Barrett Pink Floyd tapes from 1970 I would have believed them. One can instantly hear after this album the vast difference the arrival of Kjartan Sveinsson and his musical training contributed to the orchestral and string arrangements of their subsequent work.
I akin Von to Floyd's pre Dark Side material and for a collecter it's still a worthy purchase in following the history of Sigur Ros.

This is like nothing else I've heard, even from FSOL. I must admit I wondered what on earth I'd bought when I first heard it, but once I'd got to the end I got it. Swirls of ambient noise give way to some of the most beautiful electronic melodies you can imagine.
It's got loads in common with classical music, you have refrains that pop in and out at various points throughout the album, in fact they even sample Pachabel's 'Canon in D' in 'Domain'. This isn't a pop record. You can't just stick it on whilst you wander round the house and expect to like it. You have to actually sit down and listen to it as a whole to appreciate just how amazing it is.
Highly recommended, but the recommendation comes with a warning to expect the unexpected!

I'm a pretty big fan of Moby but I have never really got on with this album. It's almost as if he picked his favourite part of Play (the end Gospel bit) and stayed there. The result is an album that doesn't go anywhere and has none of the dynamism of earlier work. No matter how many times I listen I find it depressing and hard to enjoy. A real shame.

Missed the release date of this, was initially confused by last Amorphous Androgynous release, but then realized what Gary Cobain et al was trying to do was pay his homage to psychedelic music, this however is a greater and more coherent achievement. The songs and concept keep this together. Certainly on the 'Isness' the songs with lyrics were a bit iffy. Here there is more styling and maturity. The instrumentation is more organized, there is inclusion of Linda Lewis who does a nice vocal on one track, there is a fair amount of slide guitar and some all out rock. It is a very varied and complete recording with 18 tracks, all heavily processed full of screaming layers of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' type sounds, swirling about in a miasma of psychedelic mayhem. I love psychedelic music and ... Read More:
