Let's not over egg the talents of the late great artist Elliott Smith. Unfortunately his truly unique sound has been ceased upon by those who enjoy the legend of genius that was so cruelly taken. He isn't Cobain or Buckley he is simply Smith.

If you own this album you won't need me to tell you its one of those albums that not enough people get, if you do get into Smith you'll enjoy his incomplete masterpiece 'From a Basement on the Hill'.

For those that don't own this, many bands have tried Smith's jingle jangle acoustic guitar such as Turin Brakes on the opening track of their debut, but few have sounded as doubtful of the ground they stood on as Smith does on opening/title track ... Read More:

This album was the 3rd album from the offspring. Ignition was great but didn't get as popular. But as soon as the videos for 'Come Out and Play(Keep 'Em Seperated)' 'Self Esteem' and 'Gotta Get Away' were released they hit big time.
Then Ixnay was amazing. The First 4 Albums were the best and i can't choose between them.
I love the later albums too but they could have done so much better on Conspiracy Of One. Which if i had to choose would be my worst album.
But anything by the offspring is first class and i love them all.

Ixnay On The Hombre

The offspring's third album after 'ignition' and the (no pun intended) smash-hit 'Smash'. This time produced by the producer of Jane's addiction, tracks often seem to have some jane's addiction influence, but when you listen to the entire album it is still undeniably offspring style. Having bought this album after i bought the 'greatest hits' collection, I found that several tracks were unbelievably catchy and some songs had more mature themes; 'Gone Away' in particular.

This is my rating of the songs

01 Disclaimer 9/10 possibly the best intro to a punk album ever. Very funny.
02 The Meaning of Life 8/10 Good song, good riffs.
03 Mota 9/10 I love this song, the opening riff and 'MOTA' is awesum.

Challenging stuff this and an album I really had to persevere with. Eventually the tunes start emerging from the ether and like muck, they stay stuck. A lo-fi work of art. A toss-up between this and Brighten the Corners for my favourite Pavement album. Winning me over are the mumbled and oblique Zurich is Stained (what is that about?) and the perfect pop gem Here.

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album is an album I came to a couple of years ago through the volume of spectacular reviews a came across. Clearly this wasn't the usual over-hyped rock-lite fluff.

Everyone said it was magnificent. Everyone was right.

The difficulty is, I've not come across someone who's really put their finger on why it's so great.

For me, it's the passion with which Jeff Mangum delivers the guitar and vocals. He plays like his life depends on it. Maybe he needed to write the greatest album ever, and this is what came out?

For anyone who is already a fan of Calexico, this album is a must. For anyone who hasn't heard of them before, read on.

Imagine taking some of the best elements of ambience of Velvet Underground, mixing in the soundtrack to a Fistful of Dollars while sitting in a cafe in Paris watching a street performer on accordion, and you start to get the general feel of this group.

Every track is undersold, with sublime understated vocals. This album is particularly atmospheric and slightly more downbeat than some of their other albums.

It doesn't quite measure up to Hot Rail (a complete 5 star classic in my book), but it has a different feel to it, so the comparison may not be fair.

In my mind I see Ease down the road as the greatest album of the twenty first yet. A work of chilling lyrical genius sung by the best voice(s) in todays music world. The album never misses a beat, it's dark, crooning, joyus and uplifting at the same time as it carelessly swings from tune to tune. From the swaggering majesty of A king at night to the darkly driven Grand dark feeling of emptiness this album just keeps on delivering. Some of the most lazy and wonderful harmonies appear backed by the full band, but they easily drift away to songs such as Carless love were Will Oldham literally hypnotises you with his voice alone. I'm glad that I had got The Colour and the Shape and Nothing Left to Lose before I got this. To me is has always sounded rougher and a lot less commercial than the later albums. I like it more now but it took me a while to get into as it isn't as polished and some of the songs sound a bit messy and dated.

One of my favourite songs from this album is `Exhausted'. I thought there was something wrong with my CD when I first heard it! It's made up of static or feedback (something like that I'm not a technical person when it comes to music), and drumming. You really get used to it after a couple of listens and it sounds a lot better but very moody and distant sounding. Terror Twilight

After hearing a good word about pavement from my friend i immediately saught out an album by them in my dads cd collection. I was not dissapointed. From first track 'spit on a stranger' the album has song a after song of great music. My favourite song has to be 'cream of gold' for it's amazing solo which sounds like radiohead being covered by sonic youth. I keep listening to this album and i love it. A great album for any fan of alternative music.
