This was the time when the UK stood up and took notice of Athens' finest. Their bravery in issuing a mandolin led first single was regrettably offset by their foray into cheesy pop. 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Radio Song' aside, this is an excellent record that holds songs of great variety and boasts two of the best songs of that particular era in 'Losing My Religion' and a song so personal that Mr Stipe had to perform it with his back to the audience - 'Country Feedback'. They may have been thrust upon the UK market for all the wrong reasons (see cheesy pop reference above), but in this case the end very definitely justified the means.

The reason this album took the red hot chili peppers from underground to mainstreme is because of Rick Rubin, Anthoney Kidies described him as the person who makes the chili's complete and I agree after listing to this album.

There's no disputing that the late, great Elliott Smith had a knack for catchy, pretty tunes. Unlike the average pop song, though, their beauty goes way more than skin deep. You can't move these days for melancholy guys and their guitars... goodbye, my lover, blah blah. But if you're looking for music to nurse you through breakdowns as well as break-ups, then you've come to the right place.
Yeah, these are mostly love songs but so much more. It's hard to explain, but some music you don't just listen to, you kind of absorb it. His fragile, unassuming voice gently shuffles its way into your subconscious and takes root. `Between the Bars' is so beautiful, you could listen to it a million times and never tire of it. Elliott Smith fans generally ... Read More:

The earlier review by tonyfordy is spot on. Just when you thought you'd got to know what Beck could (or couldn't) do, he releases this - a beautiful, introspective and melodic peach of an album - easily bruised but immensely tasty! A touch of Bergman to complement the Tarantino.

well, where do i start, for me personally, this album is head and shoulders above anything, i have ever listened to. (Gish/machina are amazing, i must say) this album encapsulates youth, and the whole spectrum of emotions, for me, there are no fillers, as the cds, are like going on a journey, and all different styles, and moods are used, soft and quiet, love and hate, hope, and despair. If ever an album is a work of genious this is it...thank god, it isnt mainstream, and accessable to everyone, as surely this would mean it wouldnt be half as good. Corgan had loads more songs that he couldnt fit into melloncollie, and these b sides are worthy of an album release independantly(the aeroplane flies high box is cool for these). The sheer creative output during this period is mesmerising. ... Read More:

Just had to add my 5 star review to the pile. This is a timeless, classic album. The songs are still as fresh today as they were 15 years ago. And especially when played live!
Think Amazon should have a special category for albums with 100% 5 star reviews. Can't be too many of them.

I was instantly captivated by the soaring vocals, lush harmonies and orchestrations, and sterling production of this their 11th album. On this album there are pop singles (the catchy yet wistful "Fight Test," the tongue-in-cheek title track), instrumentals (the aggressive "Part II" of the title track and the smooth & mellow, Grammy-winning "Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon") and even a prog rock number ("In the Morning of the Magicians") reminiscent of mid-1970's Yes.
The range of music on this record is astonishing. The pristine production values help the songs flow together and enhance the overall listening experience. Superficially a concept album about a Japanese girl who battles evil robots, "Yoshimi" is really a meditation about life and death, and the need for mortal ... Read More:
