Calexico's second album is a sprawling, doom-laden and cinematic work that draws heavily on latin jazz, mariachi, country and gypsy folk. Typically rich in the kind of malevolent desert imagery and border country narratives that suggest the novels of Cormac McCarthy, `Black Light' explores territory that is more fully realised in their later work, particularly `Feat of Wire'. Another widescreen production, Calexico are seemingly the natural heirs to Ennio Morricone's wild west atmospherics (check out `Minas De Cobre').
From the opener `Gypsy's Curse', `Black Light' is heavy on nocturnal ambience, rendered in sometimes lengthy instrumental passages, but is lighter on songwriting. Calexico have never been great songwriters, partly because their thematic ... Read More:

This is a real music lover's album. An Original, eclectic mix of bluesy, rocksy, folksy, jazzy tunes. At the time of performing some of the tracks Buffalo Springfield were playing at the Whisky in LA's Sunset Strip during its golden age when Jefferson Airplane and The Doors were sharing top billing (for a time Jim Morrison was obsessed with Mr Soul Man, written in response to police brutality in LA, singing it everywhere he went). In fact the band's obvious eclecticism on this album is probably more easily understood in comparison to these bands rather than the folk-rock tradition of which this album forms an inevitable part.Made at a time when the first wave of sixties bands had enjoyed their first flush and people were looking for something different this is a chance to ... The Mavericks' reunion album, after a four year break and a patchy solo album from Raul Malo, turns out to be a bit of a disappointment for anyone who loved the Cuban-rock-latin influenced "Trampoline" or the humour and Tex-Mex tinged "Music For All Occasions". On first listenings it is very derivative of all four main albums that brought them fame, and a watered-down derivative at that.
Lead track, "I Want To Know" has the characteristic Maverick twangy guitar and beat, but it's a twee pop song worthy of a place on an Archies album. "In My Dreams" has the "What A Crying Shame" intro and similar tune. "Shine A Light" and "San Jose" have chugging latin beats; "Because Of You" is an old-fashioned 'broken hearts' country & western honky tonk number. There are a few ... Read More:

This is a charming album of simple and heartfelt songs, mostly gentle but intimately powerful. I found the approach thoroughly engaging, with sparse production and instrumentation complementing the lyrics and Lucinda's vocals. The simplicity of 'Mama you Sweet' (with one very long verse) draws you in to the emotion of the song. 'Are You Alright' and 'Where is my Love' are great, beautiful songs and Jenny Scheinman's expressive violin adds a unique layer to the arrangements.
I thought some of the songs could have been shorter, and that the CD might have been better with a few tracks omitted. The album isn't full of instant hits but reveals itself over time, and is well worth taking the time to get to know it.

Bruce Springsteen is a massive name in America, but less so in the UK where he is much more lauded by the press than by the people. Those that do know him mostly know him for the likes of the painfully misunderstood 'Born In The USA' or 'Dancin' In The Dark,' rather than the sparse soundscapes of say, Nebraska. With all his bombast and overblown performing, it's easy to forget that Springsteen is heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, and it's this influence which comes to the fore on The Ghost Of Tom Joad.
The title track notably covered by the infinitely credible Rage Against The Machine, Ghost Of Tom Joad is the album for non-Springsteen fans to enjoy. Nothing here is within spitting distance of the 1980s reverb of 'Born In The USA' or the E-Street Band. Instead, we have ... Read More:

If you like, say, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs (a la 'We're all alone'), perhaps a bit of John Martyn - that sort of thing - possibly with a bit of blue grass guitar mixed with an almost norweigian skiffle type feel, then you will love this, actually even if you don't, you'll love this anyway. from the rolling moments of the first few bars right til the end, coupled with the everso slightly twangy, but heart warming (and very different) vocal, it is a gorgeous adventure into Gordon's world. Gord's Gold includes those songs that you know, but you don't, if you see what I mean - you'll have heard them over and over but never quite placed them (Early Morning Rain, Beautiful and the famous 'If You Could Read My Mind' (the track I particularly bought it for) and got hooked . . . try and it and ... This is that jackpot album the Mavericks were waiting for. You'd be forgiven for not having heard of them, as until Trampoline, they used to be filed under Country & Western. Actually the band is from Miami, they just do their thing in Nashville!
With each successive album (and since I discovered Trampoline, I've bought the rest!) they've gone less C&W, and more mainstream. On this one they've added a great horn section to give a latin flavour, and boy do they have fun!
Raul Malo, their lead singer has one of those voices that's clear as a bell, and soars effortlessly into falsetto as Roy Orbison's did, and Chris Isaak's does now. The musicianship from all is absolutely top class on ballads, and the foot tappers.
You must have heard the hit `Dance the night away' on ... Read More:

This is the closest re-release we have to Baez's 60's double set, "Any day Now", and includes a few numbers not on that set. At first appearances it might appeal most to those who find Dylan's singing voice at times mannered and irritating in his original or live recordings. However, the real virtue of this set, and the reason why it should be more popular with Dylan fans, is in the way it lifts a veil to reveal the superb quality of the musicality of Dylan's songs. Whereas Dylan himself frequently clips and flattens his music, all is revealed here, albeit at the expense of the some emotional content. An added bonus is a great performance of one of his finest songs, "Love is Just a Four-lettered Word", which he did not record himself. A gem of a gift to Baez.
