The sixties produced a vast multitude of classic debut albums and this comfortably falls within that category. It's not surprising when you think of the sheer talent in this band and it's such a shame that the glory was shortlived. However, what there was of the Buffalo Springfield recording legacy ranks alongside all the other great artists of the era. Although Neil Young went on to greater fame and solo success, this eponymous effort finds Stephen Stills in blistering form, showcasing his supreme ability as a songwriter. The compositions are outstanding, the singing is outstanding and the interplay and skill of the musicians is second to none. It's sheer magic. How anyone can fail to give this album five stars is, quite frankly, beyond ... Read More:

Get it clear in your head first. This is a really great album. It might take a few listens for some, but it's definately worth the effort. There is a "but" though. I have it on good authority that there are people in the world who do not like Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart, Bright Eyes, Belle and Sebastian, Ry Cooder and the like. So if you are one of those people you should probably give it a miss. If, however, you are a true lover of beautifull music, then this is a must buy. It really is a fantasic album that gets better with every listen.

Having come to this album through the film, I never cease to be amazed at how Bob Dylan got this so right. Usually, soundtracks are bitty and without the film action to guide them, seem spare. This is not the case of PAT GARRETT..., which is so convincing an album in its own right. I guess the style fitted in well with his own country blues leanings of BLONDE ON BLONDE and the later BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, (which must have been his reward from the Byrds and their having used so many of his songs in the past).
Dylan threads his themes very well, and there is a touch of repetition that might have been borrowed from classical sources (to the great benefit of the album). While most songs are country folk, I like "Turkey Chase" which is heading ... Read More:

I find it a little tiresome that fans of certain bands latch onto one album and expect subsequent releases to be mirror images of that particular favourite. What would be the point of that? I am not a huge WGC fan, but this is a beautifully spiritual album that rewards on every listen.I sold my copy of Let It Roll: that won't be the case with this one. Listen again!
Release Date March 20, 1999
Perhaps I was biased towards this album by the birth of my son in 1991, but I used to sing these songs repeatedly to him in every effort to lull him towards sleep. For me, it's one of the top 5 album releases of that decade, the others being 'Time Out Of Mind' by Bob Dylan, 'The Future' by Leonard Cohen, 'Nevermind' by Nirvana (also to show I'm not just some old fart stuck in the past), and best of all the greatest, most complete debut of all time: the evergreen 'Grace' by Jeff Buckley. 'Night Ride Home' is chock-full of great songs: from the brilliant opener (the title track) to the fine fine single release 'Coming In From The Cold' it almost purports to be Joni's finest hour, but I feel, personally, that the album slopes off a bit there. Admittedly, I'm not ... Read More:

this album is fantastic i have all the mavericks albums and i like this one best as it has all the classics and three really excellent new ones.A must buy for Mavs fans
Release Date February 19, 2007
This is a charming album of simple and heartfelt songs, mostly gentle but intimately powerful. I found the approach thoroughly engaging, with sparse production and instrumentation complementing the lyrics and Lucinda's vocals. The simplicity of 'Mama you Sweet' (with one very long verse) draws you in to the emotion of the song. 'Are You Alright' and 'Where is my Love' are great, beautiful songs and Jenny Scheinman's expressive violin adds a unique layer to the arrangements.
I thought some of the songs could have been shorter, and that the CD might have been better with a few tracks omitted. The album isn't full of instant hits but reveals itself over time, and is well worth taking the time to get to know it.

The Mavericks' reunion album, after a four year break and a patchy solo album from Raul Malo, turns out to be a bit of a disappointment for anyone who loved the Cuban-rock-latin influenced "Trampoline" or the humour and Tex-Mex tinged "Music For All Occasions". On first listenings it is very derivative of all four main albums that brought them fame, and a watered-down derivative at that.
Lead track, "I Want To Know" has the characteristic Maverick twangy guitar and beat, but it's a twee pop song worthy of a place on an Archies album. "In My Dreams" has the "What A Crying Shame" intro and similar tune. "Shine A Light" and "San Jose" have chugging latin beats; "Because Of You" is an old-fashioned 'broken hearts' country & western honky tonk number. There are a few ... Read More:

I was there for her 'Let it Rain' Tour (presumably 2003) along with her tour Act Jason Mraz (he's very good - thoughtful lyrics / likely to stay in your head for days!) and it was just a fantastic night - a taste of her earlier work mixed with songs from this album - she sounds fantastic on disc but incredible live - for someone looking for an all round excellent album to stay in your hifi - this is it - kick back - relax, chill and enjoy.
Jason Mraz - 'Waiting for my rocket to come' also really good.

Calexico's second album is a sprawling, doom-laden and cinematic work that draws heavily on latin jazz, mariachi, country and gypsy folk. Typically rich in the kind of malevolent desert imagery and border country narratives that suggest the novels of Cormac McCarthy, `Black Light' explores territory that is more fully realised in their later work, particularly `Feat of Wire'. Another widescreen production, Calexico are seemingly the natural heirs to Ennio Morricone's wild west atmospherics (check out `Minas De Cobre').
From the opener `Gypsy's Curse', `Black Light' is heavy on nocturnal ambience, rendered in sometimes lengthy instrumental passages, but is lighter on songwriting. Calexico have never been great songwriters, partly because their thematic concerns seem ... Read More:
