This is a great album of live Dylan with The Band. It is wild, rough and rocking and contains classic versions of many of Dylan's most popular songs - some with Dylan singing solo and some very excitingly with The Band. There are also a good few tracks of The Band doing some of their own classics. There is no need to hesitate - this is a classic.
I saw him in York, England a few months back, and he was the best i have ever seen.
This man knows his craft!
This album is a lovely introduction to the varied sounds of Loudon Wainwright. Personal favorites are 'IDTTYWLM', utterly superb. 'Martha' is sweet, 'One Man Guy' typically bitter enough to be a Loudon great song. Really all these songs on this album are amazing.
I can't convey just how good Loudon is. I only hope you buy this album and more to find out!

Coming within a year of their debut album, it's no surprise that The Byrds' second album is so similar in form. Even so, they seemed to have matured enough for this to be a more solid and polished production. My one minor quibble is the choice of some of the material. Gene Clark's songs showed that his contribution to 'Mr Tambourine Man' was no flash in the pan and he quickly developed his own writing style. In addition, the drone effect added to his 'If You're Gone' is eerily effective. Jim McGuinn's songs are also impressive, especially 'It Won't Be Wrong'.
With such fine material coming from within the band, I'd question why they dragged in some of the cover songs. They frequently mined Dylan with success, but I always felt that 'The ... Read More:

This collection of Cohen songs, compiled by Mojo, offers some of the best work of his career, from the 1960s to 2001. It opens with the sublime Suzanne and then the classics just keep coming. These early songs in the simple folk style have achieved the status of hymns in the Cohen canon: masterpieces like Sisters Of Mercy, Bird On The Wire, Joan Of Arc and Famous Blue Raincoat.
Even in those days, he could be quite harsh, more rock than folk, like in the concluding phase of One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong and on a powerful track like Diamonds In The Mine. And Iodine of course, from the much criticized Death Of A Ladies' Man album. The rest of the songs, perhaps because not enough time has passed, have yet to achieve the legendary hymn-like status of the early ... Read More:

I was facing a long car journey with a friend a few weeks back. Luckily he had 2 recent purchases with him - No Other and Pacific Ocean Blue (Dennis Wilson). I have to say that the miles flew by listening to both those wonderful albums. There is a reason why No Other has consistent 5-star reviews here and Pacific Ocean Blue is not far off. The mention above of Gram Parsons'"Cosmic American Music" sums it up. This album really does capture the essence of what can make American (West Coast) music great.

This could have been a great album, but Dylan must have had a brainstorm when he decided to hand it over to Arthur Baker.
So what we get is an aberration in Dylans album canon!! Imagine the album stripped of the syrupy synthesised bilge Baker put on there?
I tried playing this a while ago to see if it had retrospectively improved with the passing of time. I took it off after one song. Its unlistenable to say the least.
Arthur Baker....give up your day job and please do not step into another recording studio in your life!!!!

After being thoroughly disappointed with Rilo Kiley's last album I approached this with some trepidation. Thankfully this turned out to be a good listen - not immediate but a definite 'grower' after a few plays. Songs such as 'Pretty Bird' and 'Godspeed' are gorgeous, for example. I've even grown to quite like Elvis Costello's contribution to 'Carpetbaggers' which at first struck me as rough and too raw. Now I think I think it fits the song. All in all, worth a listen. Jenny Lewis is a talented writer and singer - one wonders why she needs Rilo any more as this is far superior. I do agree with the reviewer about the cover - it is shockingly bad considering the quality of the contents. No stars for that!
