Recorded live in London & Brighton in December 1979, this wonderful live album was released only in 2000. Cohen's vocals & guitar are supported by the voices of Jennifer Warnes & Sharon Robinson, John Bilezikjian on lute & mandolin, Raffi Hakopian on violin and the band Passenger with bass, keyboards, drums, electric guitar, saxophone & flute. Field Commander is far removed from Live Songs (1974) with its almost unbearably distressing tracks like Please Don't Pass Me By.
Most of the tracks come from Recent Songs (1979) and New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974) whilst Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967) is represented by three songs, Songs from a Room (1968) by Bird on a Wire and the controversial Death of a Ladies' ... Read More:

I just had to write about the marvel that is "I Dream A Highway" the last song on this cd, if there's one song you hear in your lifetime make it this one! it achingly beautiful, introspective, spine-tingling - simply put Brilliant!! worth the price of the cd alone and it's a song that i have been listening to non-stop all month!!
The cd in general honestly is brilliant! but Gillian really has outdone herself with "I Dream A Highway"!
Release Date January 25, 1993
The sixties produced a vast multitude of classic debut albums and this comfortably falls within that category. It's not surprising when you think of the sheer talent in this band and it's such a shame that the glory was shortlived. However, what there was of the Buffalo Springfield recording legacy ranks alongside all the other great artists of the era. Although Neil Young went on to greater fame and solo success, this eponymous effort finds Stephen Stills in blistering form, showcasing his supreme ability as a songwriter. The compositions are outstanding, the singing is outstanding and the interplay and skill of the musicians is second to none. It's sheer magic. How anyone can fail to give this album five stars is, quite frankly, beyond ... Read More:

This is an excellent introduction to the music of Steve Earle. Steve Earle is an amazing musician who almost defies classification – he has his roots in country music but his work shows strong rock influences, particularly influenced by the blue collar rock of Bruce Springsteen (in fact this album includes a couple of Springsteen covers).
The album takes tracks from Earle’s first four albums (Guitar Town, Exit 0, Copperhead Road & The Hard Way) together with five live tracks from his live album Shut up and die like an Aviator. Personally I prefer later Earle (Jerusalem and El Corazon are probably my two favourite albums) but this is fantastic introduction to early Steve Earle. In some ways it is more country than some ... ...but still great enough. Phil Spector gives you the ultimate musical overkill with his famous WALL OF SOUND, which personally I could have done without. Still Cohen's songs are great as ever, especially the last track, which is also the title of the album. Cohen himself, I read, wasn't very happy with this release, but still a great album and far better than anything released nowadays.

This is a real music lover's album. An Original, eclectic mix of bluesy, rocksy, folksy, jazzy tunes. At the time of performing some of the tracks Buffalo Springfield were playing at the Whisky in LA's Sunset Strip during its golden age when Jefferson Airplane and The Doors were sharing top billing (for a time Jim Morrison was obsessed with Mr Soul Man, written in response to police brutality in LA, singing it everywhere he went). In fact the band's obvious eclecticism on this album is probably more easily understood in comparison to these bands rather than the folk-rock tradition of which this album forms an inevitable part.Made at a time when the first wave of sixties bands had enjoyed their first flush and people were looking for something different ... I love Suzanne Vega - she is probably remembered by her more famous tracks, Luka and Tom's Diner, but her album provides us with a wealth of beautiful, meaningful lyrics and her striking and soulful voice. My favourites tracks are Fancy Poultry/ Ironbound and Language, with beautiful lyrics such as 'if language were liquid, it would be rushing in, instead here we are in a silence more eloquent than any words could ever be'. Lovely album.

This is one of Dylans finest albums of all time.
Coming off the back of the awesome trilogy of Bringing it all back home/Highway 61 revisited and Blonde on Blonde it seemed impossible that they could be topped.
What we have here is an altogether different album, with some of Dylans greatest writing. Paring down the surrealism and iconic Beat poetry of the albums before he goes back to the beginning to reinvent himself once again.
The vocals are simply awesome and with the group backing so spare it lends weight to the rootsy feel of country style music.
A great album which I would recommend to anyone!!!!!

Nick Hornby's 31 Songs mentions this album. Many of the other people I listen to refernece Steve Earle, so I bought it and listened and loved it. Why not 5 stars? Nobody is perfect but this is a thumping good album and a great introduction for me to Steve Earle - I will be buying more!

I was heartbroken to hear that Eva Cassidy herself considered Live at Blues Alley to be a lesser work. I think it is her best album and it is the one I reach for first when I need an "Eva Fix." Each song is an individual treasure, and together, they form artistry that continues to make me mourn the loss of one of the 20th Century's finest voices, and people.
