It has been a long time coming but the end result is a quality product. My girlfriend and I listened to it for the first time on a long drive across Germany and Belgium and we liked it so much that we let it repeat several times. The melodies are good, the musicianship is first class and some of the political comment is very apt. he even nods in the direction of CCR a couple of times. Great stuff!

Jacksonville City Nights was the second of three albums Ryan released in one year (2005), helping to cement his reputation as one of the most prolific songwriters of recent years. It's always been a point of discussion (argument?) amongst Ryan fans and critics as to whether this is a good or bad thing. In my opinion it's nothing but good. Most artists leave you waiting years between releases and often then give you something disappointing. This isn't the case with Ryan, whose writing is always insightful and always a delight to listen to.
JCN is no exception. It's definitely his most 'country' solo album; as other reviewers have pointed out it's often closer to his days in Whiskeytown. Don't be put off if you're not into country music. ... Read More:

A clumsily-arranged compilation of post 'Various Positions' Cohen recordings, it opens with a clump of three tracks from 'I'm Your Man' (tracks 3,4,5 of that album in the same sequence) followed by the evergreen 'Tower Of Song', the better-known tracks from 'The Future', then some selections from 1993's Cohen Live, including a towering, aged-in-the-bottle recording of 'Suzanne', and ends with two previously unavailable tracks - the monstrously comic belter 'Never Any Good' and what sounds like a home-recorded experiment, called 'The Great Event', which some might possibly wish had remained unavailable. Myself, I'm having none of that: everything the man does is at least interesting.
All in all, it lacks the coherence of the first 'Greatest Hits' (post ... Read More:

I love Bob Dylan, and I know it's heresy, but really this is a poor CD set. Put it this way : if I woke up from a coma and had no memory of Bob Dylan, and heard this, I'd think it was a not-very-good set of 60s folk/rock recordings, with just a few decent tracks maybe worth sticking on the iPod.
I would go for it only if you are trying to get everything by Bob Dylan regardless of quality, or you absolutely love 60s folk/rock.

Got this album earlier in the year and its received a lot of plays ever since which is the best compliment I can give it. Only 9 tracks but all are quality - this album brings the sun out and sounds fresh!
Great songs, great vocals and a great arrangement - they have their own sound which is very mature for their age. The synths work a treat on this record. The album packs quite a lot of twists and turns in terms of the pace of the songs which seems to give it more longetivity beyond its catchy choruses. The Next Untouchable and Amylase are classics.
Look forward to seeing what this band can produce next. Give it a spin.

This woman has lived! The songs here deal with such a wide range of deep, at times dark, material. The atmosphere of the album is with you in the first few notes, and its the type of CD that really won't let go. Listen to this late at night when you're prepared to think about the lyrics. Some of these great songs got in my head straight away.

First I must congratulate myself on a thoughtful and rather clever title. Not mine I hasten to add! Like a lot of Bob Dylan lines you'll find one to fit practically any given situation. Try it out. It's quite bizarre. That's the greatness of 'His Bobness' though. Already I digress. Back to the rekkerd - as our American friends say. This is truly awful. Why anyone thinks this is good stuff is beyond me. And I'm 6ft 2ins!! They all sound like bad impersonations of bad impersonations of Bob. And believe me, they are!! Listen people - I'm a Bob afficianado, and when I hear these dire warblings (Going to Acapulco an exception for some reason I can't explain) I feel very very depressed. Like a lot of people I laughed the first time I heard the record. But not for long. ... Read More:

Mr Butterfield puts it perfectly in one of the earlier reviews. It's hard to fault this album. In complete contrast to the previous reviewer who thinks that there's no songs which stand up today - there are a number which to my tiny mind have rarely been topped (Tall In the Saddle is my personal favourite). The kids don't really get it - but then again they go to McFly concerts............
5 stars ,in my top 20 albums of all time (and I've got over 1000!)
