This is not an album that's in my CD player days in a row (that would be Kitty Lie Over by Mick O'Brien and Caomhín Ó Raghallaigh) but more an album I'd play in extreme moods, both highs and lows. When played in high moods this album will lift you even higher, and when in low moods, this album is a friend for life. I do not consider myself a connaisseur of Qawwali, but I know this album works wonders for me, even though I don't understand a word of what they're singing.

I heard an upbeat track (Mensoreyo - Toshin Doi, track 8) from this disk on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction, the source of much inspiration. Once in the car-CD, the disk made me smile many times and laugh out loud a few, from sheer joy at the integrity, directness and musicality of these artists. And I don't even understand any specific word... although the album comes with a handy translation of lyrics. Hirayasu has an amazing quality to his voice - 'honest country' is the best way I can describe it; and Brozman somehow melds traditional US country strings with Hawaiian honey sounds. Even my 11 year old daughter now asks to hear this one.. I'm off to buy their first album, Jin Jin/Firefly.

This is by far my favourite oud recording - a compliment which might sound a bit obscure. Actually it's some of my favourite music of any type. The truth is Bashir's appeal is truly universal and nobody should be put off if they're unfamiliar with arabic music or if previous forays have left them cold. He stays very true to his roots in classical arab music and the Maqaam tradition, but injencts enough of his own totally captivating musicality and personality to make it obvious that he is not just a genre leader. The excellent production of this recording really brings out the drama of his unique sound and phrasing. I have played it to friends outside of my obscure lute-wonk world and every single one loved it. Today's oudists pack plenty of ... Read More:

Moonsung is subtle pearl of an album in the treasure trove of contemporary world music. Chandra competently merges sounds and sentiments both potent and fragile in a collection of songs that could almost be described as a journey through the space between the subdued and the passionate. The haunting resonance of her voice is never overstated and possesses a remarkable, enchanting fluidity evocative of both traditional Indian and Gaelic folk music. "Ever so Lonely" is particularly reminiscent of the sound of Irish folk bands such as Clannad, whilst "Shehnai Song" has a considerably more Eastern feel. Experimental tracks like "Speaking in Tongues" are conspicuously more unusual, perhaps even challenging at first but contribute beautifully to the ... Read More:

This is by far Susheela's best album yet. Again she sings in different languages, namely Tamil, French and English, and the whole musical concoction this album offers has both a deeply moving and compelling effect on the listener, seducing you with it's smoky sounds and beats. Music For Crocodiles is one of my favourites with it's bold, exhilarating delivery rising to a pitch at the end. Meanwhile is an extremely provocative sexy track which just makes you want to dance. Sharvanna is a gorgeous soft mellow track which is evocative of other worlds, sensual and earthy and beautiful. In fact, all the tracks are brilliant. You cannot go wrong with this album, it is pure inspiration and genius personified. Buy it and love it.
