This is a great recording. Do not be put off by the opening; anyone expecting a full on blast of noise will be let down but this is all part of the Kodo sonic experience. Full volume Ubernoise is fine up to a point but to give a recording depth a contrast of volumes is needed and this is where this album comes into it's own. The singing is sublime and improves with each sitting as the listener begins to anticipate the players. The beauty of the record is in it's consistancy. I think that the only weak track is Monochrome. This is a highly technical piece that is difficult to grasp and I feel that the sheer listening pleasure of the drummers is sacrificed here for technical playing, though only to a limited extent. This sampler CD of various different kinds of Japanese music is more than listenable, it actually boasts some fairly decent songs.

Chief among these is probably 'Hiyami Kachi Bushi', by the Ayame Band, which has a fairly jolly, upbeat sound. Most of this album contains fairly traditional Japanese music, so don't expect too much pop. However, the song: 'Takio'l Soran Bushi' by Takio Ito is pretty much iconic-sounding, boasting shimmering Japanese strings, hypnotic, repetitive drums and one of the most astoundingly beautiful vocal performances I have ever heard. This is by far my favourite oud recording - a compliment which might sound a bit obscure. Actually it's some of my favourite music of any type. The truth is Bashir's appeal is truly universal and nobody should be put off if they're unfamiliar with arabic music or if previous forays have left them cold. He stays very true to his roots in classical arab music and the Maqaam tradition, but injencts enough of his own totally captivating musicality and personality to make it obvious that he is not just a genre leader. The excellent production of this recording really brings out the drama of his unique sound and phrasing. I have played it to friends outside of my obscure lute-wonk world and every single one loved it. Today's oudists pack plenty of fireworks ... Read More:

I bought this CD because I plan to visit Egypt, so this is a 'westerners' impression of the music (perhaps an Egyptian can also post a review that would be an informed view of the collection. I selected this particular CD by looking in the Top 50 listing of 'World Music' published in the magazine 'Songlines'. I know a top 50 of anything cultural is highly subjective and misleading but at least it gave me a start, El Sett was placed at 42 if you are interested.

Songlines mentioned that this Egyptian diva (you may find her name spelt Umm Kalthoum, she was also known as 'the Star of the East' and is the Arab world equivalent of the Beatles in popularity) was appreciated by all so much that her funeral in 1975 was attended by three million.
