It is rare or almost impossible to find ragas written in western notation.
This is because most of Indian classical music is based on memorising certain themes and melodies and then improvising on them, and very little seems to get written down.
So unless you can play by ear or have access to a teacher , its very difficult to pick up or play raga music alone.
The book is extremely useful in that it first lets you hear a particular
raga and then give you the notation to be able to play it.
I have not come accross anything like this before and is especially aimed at a western audiance.
Good book.

If you were Impressed with Gilles Peterson's eponymous CD compilation, and enjoyed Joe Harriott and Amancio D'Silva's track (Jaipur), then you will love Indo-Jazz Fusions. But the music contained on this CD is far more refined and sophisticated than Jaipur, and is highly polished in terms of performance and recording quality. The entire CD gradually absorbs you into it as you listen. When you first play it you may think that the concept of synthesising jazz with Indian raga would be a mistake. Be patient! It sucks you in. You will begin to wear the music like a favourite baggy shirt, and you'll never want to take it off. In fact, it gets under your skin in a most pleasing fashion. You will want to hear it again and again. The music is so multilayered ... Read More:

i dont want to slag off what real world do because they are instrumental in bringing some of the most fantastic singers/musicians from all over the world to our attention. the problem is that the second western musicians take control of production they tend to dilute the soul in the music by adding preset synths, etc. why cant they keep it simple and with no computer beats please!to be fair this album is nowhere near the worst example of this problem but the production is just too polished for my taste. its frustrating because if only the great man had been produced by the likes of holger czukay, david sylvian or eno, etc the sound would have still been commercial enough but it would have been more organic and therefore would be timeless. never mind.

I've listened to several recordings of Tuvan music and this is the one which I feel comes closest to nomadic origins of the form. An almost painful melancholoy and sense of unending distance pervade many of the tracks on this disc. Tuvas more recent history is not, however, ignored; a Tuvan version of the communist 'internationale' is also included.

This CD offers great variety-Egyptian, tribal, you name it, it's all there! Whereas other CDs I've bought tend to have quite old songs on them, this one has some very nice contemporary beats to it. Perfect if you want something to help you broaden your horizons-I will definitely be checking out some of the albums of the artists featured. This CD is great to shake your hips to, belly dancer or not!
