This is a great recording. Do not be put off by the opening; anyone expecting a full on blast of noise will be let down but this is all part of the Kodo sonic experience. Full volume Ubernoise is fine up to a point but to give a recording depth a contrast of volumes is needed and this is where this album comes into it's own. The singing is sublime and improves with each sitting as the listener begins to anticipate the players. The beauty of the record is in it's consistancy. I think that the only weak track is Monochrome. This is a highly technical piece that is difficult to grasp and I feel that the sheer listening pleasure of the drummers is sacrificed here for technical playing, though only to a limited extent. I give this a low score not because of content, but because of the idiocy of the publishers of this CD. This is NOT anything to do with Mantras. It is also NOT for peaceful meditation.
The album is actually a recording of the ritual of CHö (often transcribed as CHOD), which is a "heavy" tantric technique of offering one's body to all beings in the universe, in order to cut through attachment, fixation and fear. This recording seems to be the Nying Thig Chod, entitled "Laughter of the Dakinis", commonly practiced in the Nyingma lineage.
Whoever created the album, using some borrowed recording that they are clueless about, should be truly ashamed.

Eastwind - Japanese Shakuhachi Music

This CD consists of twelve pieces composed for the ethereally beautiful Japanese bamboo flute, the Shakuhachi. The Shakuhachi produces a wonderfully haunting style of music that is full of emotion and the tracks on this disc are all brilliant examples of this instrument's art. All the pieces on this disc are composed and expertly played by Masayuki Koga, a master Shakuhachi player who I will definitely be looking out for in the future. Anyone who is a fan of far eastern music, and the music of Japan in particular, will not be disappointed with having this CD in their collection.

This album is simply amazing. I thought that the main review on here actually seemed to be questioning Anoushka's abilities. Much like her father Ravi, she is very skilled and talented in traditional Indian music, and has a great understanding of what we call Contemporary music. This is what 'Rise' is, it is a beautiful melding of the two styles together, mixing the traditional with the contemporary.

All of the songs on here are exemplary in every way. The composition and the performances are better than a lot of modern contemporary artists, who could learn a thing or two about arrangement, performance, and composition from this.
