I generally find that many jazz soloist (of which Jan Gabarek appers to be one) make themselves too prominent. Much of the content of this album falls into this category with three exceptions: Rites; We are the stars and The moon over Mtatsminda. The first and last make this album worth buying on their own but The moon over Mtatsminda justifies the price because it is literally sublime. I am not familiar with Georgian but I felt and understood its message before reading the words. This is true art. Jan Garbarek's playing complemented the voice of Jansung Kakhidze who sang perfectly and gave us the universal that will speak to everyone. Only caution would prevent me from exploring more of Jan Garbareks output so I would urge the producers ... Read More:

Freddie Hubbbard is in some respects an unsung hero of jazz. He made key contributions to a remarkable number of classic jazz recordings in the early/mid 60s, including several albums with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Ornette Coleman's 'Free Jazz', Eric Dolphy's 'Out To Lunch,' Wayne Shorter's 'Speak No Evil,' and, for me, containing his best work of all, Herbie Hancock's 'Takin Off,' 'Empyrean Isles,' and 'Maiden Voyage.' This, however is one of several albums he recorded as leader, on Blue Note, and is widely regarded as his best. The album begins with a typical Hubbard performance on 'You're My Everything;' his sound is bright with a lovely warm tone and he plays lyrical phrases and fast flowing runs with equal skill. The title track ... Read More:

This second installment in the "Radio Gnome Invisible" trilogy was rushed out on a wave of enthusiasm thanks to a British record contract with Virgin a few months after the first installment, "Flying Teapot", and is a remarkable improvement. The long, rambling jams of "Teapot" have all but disappeared, replaced by a suite of twelve well-crafted songs, musical interludes and moments of inspired lunacy (literally -- the album was purportedly recorded at full moon in the woods near the band's French home), linked by a clear narrative concept and with a pleasing orgasmic structure: it starts gently, it reaches a mind-rocking climax, and it ends, and when it does you're satisfied. You might even not bother with playing "You" afterwards, which is a very cold ... Read More:

I can't truthfully review this except to say that I bought it wanting to experiment, having seen Cecil Taylor in a televised concert. I can't make sense of why I like it so much but I've listened to this and many other Cecil Taylor albums and always feel rewarded. It makes demands.

This CD is wonderful! The range of material included is excellent, running from 11th century religious content to modern works written just a few years ago. The works are extremely varied, but the CD works on the common themes of music with a modal sound and of music of mourning (hence the subtitle "Ancient Tears"). The use of traditions and instruments from other cultures is refreshing, and the different styles serve to hold the listeners interest. The sounds and melodies grab the attention at once, but the intricacy of the music keeps you interested on subsequent listenings - keep an ear out in particular for the first musically coherent quarter tone playing I've ever heard (!), which crops up in track 6.
