Release Date April 03, 2000
I bought the CD and loved it. I saw the ballet and loved that but was most impressed by how danceable it is and how the choreography and music work together.
The score has moments of Tippettian lyricism, definite allusions to Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet' including one small direct quotation, and lots of rhythmic elements that wouldn't be out of place in Stravinsky's 'Rite'.
It's also one of very few works incorporating electric guitar (the only other I can think of is by Tippett) that actually uses the instrument for what it is rather than its iconoclastic status. I took a friend with conservative music tastes to the ballet and she didn't even notice the electric guitar so well is it integrated into the soundscape ... Read More:

Cinephile Jonathan Ross gushes over the film score composer in the sleeve notes to this excellent anthology ("For my money you can't beat a bit of Barry", "Check out the boss" and "The man's a God"). Themeology explains why Ross splashes the superlatives so liberally. Many of his memorable James Bond film themes are here, including: `Goldfinger', `Diamonds Are Forever' and From Russia With Love' (Barry's name has now become synonymous with the series). His other TV/Film work covered here is of comparable quality. From the melancholy `Midnight Cowboy through the jazzy strains of `Beat for Beatniks' to the chilling theme for The Persuaders' TV series you can see why Barry, the master of many moods, has been honoured with five Academy Awards for his ... When Delius wrote his own libretto in English based on Gottfried Keller's novel Die Leute von Seldwyla he took his title from an obvious resemblance to Shakespeare in the plot. For me there is another poem that keeps suggesting itself, and it is Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott. Changing Tennyson's pronoun from `she' to `they' I get a caption for this review. When I come to the sad outcome aboard the boat in each case I think `Singing, in their song they died'. The intriguing analogy, which may or may not be applicable, would be `The curse is come upon them'.
Sali and Vrenchen, the Swiss family Romeo and Juliet, have prosperous farmers for fathers. Between their farms is a strip of waste land coveted by both. The nearest this tract has to ... Read More:

What is this music? It's beautiful? Whether it is just background to a dinner party or a quiet time when you're soaking in the bath or infromt of the fire.... This is really "feel-good" music. Enjoy!

Of the four works on this CD the Berkeley and Lambert/Scarlatti are premiere recordings and fine they are too. I bought this disc mainly for the Lambert/Liszt arrangement of the ballet Apparitions well played here by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Barry Wordsworth. These fifteen pieces were orchestrated by the composer Gordon Jacob, three of which are from the 'Christmas Tree Suite'. A full version of this Suite arranged for orchestra, by Anthony Collins is available on a Naxos CD called 'The Night before Christmas' (Naxos 8.570331). A very worthwhile disc from the Dutton label who continue to surprise us with unduly neglected repertoire by British Composers from the mid 19th to 20th century. This catalogue is well worth investigating.
