Berg's Lulu has always been one of my favourite 20th century operas. Act three was completed years after Berg's death, premiered in Paris in 1979, with Boulez conducting and Teresa Stratas as Lulu. I was thrilled. After years of listening to the two acts with it's act three filler, (a musical Venus without arms) this was a revelation. This version, done in English is a real page turner... the music, it's just wonderful... Have our ears adjusted at last to 12 tone music? Who knew Berg's music would sound so beautiful, so accessible when mated with the English language... this text really communicates. It's so multi-layered. This is a brilliant and evocative record and one of Miroslav's finest. There is clearly tremendous empathy between the musicians; the replacement of Kenny Kirkland with John Taylor brought everything into focus, and the music is superb. The compositions above all convey great emotion, a certain sadness perhaps but with great maturity and...acceptance of (not resignation to) life's changes. Virtuousity on a musical instrument is one thing, but the sensitivity and interplay between these musicians completely transcends all of that. IMHO one of the greatest ECM recordings ever, even today. The long opening track (based on a folksong)could be the story of a life, and the versions of Surman's "Tess" and Taylor's "Windfall" may have been equalled ... Read More:
