This is small group jazz at its very best. After casting off the restraints of the bossa nova years and dabblings in popish fusion stuff, hear Getz doing what he does best - playing gorgeous tenor with some great sidemen. Stan really stretches out here - including a fast 'What Is This Thing Called Love'- but even though it was one of his last recordings, not much of the butter seems to have run out of his tone. He sounds irristable on the opening 'El Cahon' and all throughout the CD he weaves long flowing lines through and around the chords - a masterly show of phrasing. Mention should also be made of Kenny Barron and the rhythm section. They accompany Stan perfectly, diggin in or mellowing out accordingly. Barron further proves himself ... Read More:

This album is AMAZING if you ask me; although robust and virtuoso tenor sax of Sonny Rollins is obviously a successor of Hawk's vast tenor-sax legacy, and Hawk could obviously still play very very strong at the time this was recorded, I didn't expect such a magnificent blending of different styles...
There's nothing pompous or overblown here although the players don't fear extending themselves in any direction, so their interaction is at the sime time witty, surprising at, somehow, logical, as if they had played together for countless many times (they haven't; this seems to be their second musical encounter).
My favorite track? Hard to pick - maybe Summertime and Lover Man could compete for the title... The rest of ... Read More:

Andre Previn became famous as a jazz pianist while still in his late teens, and made some great albums with Shelley Manne and others. Then in the late 1960s he began to devote himself to classical music, and attained even greater fame as a conductor and as a classical pianist. This CD was made in 1989, when he was still busy with his conducting. He missed playing with jazz people, and wanted to return to his musical past. He hand-picked Joe Pass and Ray Brown to work with him for the first time. The result is a relaxed and swinging album.

This is a superb re-issue of an already good original album. This CD re-issue has five extra tracks over the original album tracks. At this stage of his career (1961) Oscar Peterson was at effortless peak that he maintained for an incredibly longtime (basically the 1950's to the mid 1980's.
This is best represented by 'Chicago'. Starting with an inspired introduction which keeps you guessing what the tune will be, followed by a gradual change up through the gears until at 7:13 top gear is reached and the band are absolutely swinging. Now Oscar is really flying, bits of stride Piano, double handed parts that require virtuoso technique... This is an astounding performance that everybody should have in their Jazz Piano collection. ... Read More:

I struggle to name an Oscar Peterson album that is better than this one. With NHOP on bass and Joe Pass on Guitar this is the most technically accomplished trio of Oscar Petersons career.
As an example of how to play the blues you can do no better than listen to Chicago blues. This is stunning playing. The tempo is not particulary fast but Peterson burns up the keyboard, and it is more than just a lot of notes. There are some wonderful rhythmic nuances which keep what is a long piece (13:42) interesting. You could equate these nuances to gear changes.
Interestingly you can get a sheet music transcription of Petersons first solo from Chicago blues. Its published in the marvellous volume of sheet music "Oscar Peterson Note ... Read More:
