"But above all else, I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison." Or words to that effect. So said the greatest tunesmith of the last 35 years about the greatest pop singer ever. So... he should know. Anyone with any kind of singing pretensions would give some kind of limb to produce a sound like the "Big O," especially if it involved belting out 'Only the Lonely.'
You could just imagine it: - lights out, a windy jersey night, the gramaphone turned up way high... Play this album with the lights down low, and the volume turned up. You will find something that transcends 99% of 'popular music' and gives you something that will last for decades. Just ask Bruce Springsteen.

Calexico's sound inhabits the frontier badlands of the American Southwest, a cinematic multi-instumental brew that takes in jazz, alt-country, Mariachi, folk and electronics. It's a widescreen affair, a mixture of traditional rootsy Americana ('Quattro') and brooding instrumental mood pieces ('Pepita', 'Across The Wire') that evoke rust and dust choked border towns. Dubbed 'desert-rock' by some, don't be turned off by the Tex-Mex conceit, this is a wonderful album overflowing with ideas; a real grower that rewards repeated listens.
The filmic quality to the music is enhanced by anecdotal and scene-setting lyrics, not to mention Enio Morricone-schooled atmospherics. But they can do breezy west coast pop as well ('Not Even Stevie Nicks') ... Read More:

With two good albums under his belt, "Guitar Town" from 1986 and "Exit O" from 1987, "Copperhead Road" was Steve Earle's 3rd record for the MCA stable and he had clearly hit his song-writing stride. I remember when I bought it at the time that it sounded just HUGE - and although he was considered a `country' artist, "Copperhead Road" was a really a blasting rock 'n' roll beast of a thing with some country tinges thrown in for good measure. Even the front cover and picture of him on the rear smacked of `attitude' - a snot-nosed punk on a Harley eyeing up your underage daughter with less than moral intent. From the opening track it reeked of bar-drenched alcohol and chemical substances that weren't exactly Milk of Magnesia nor Aspirins. In other words, ... Read More:

This is a perfect introduction to anyone new to the amazing talent of Lee Ann Womack.Traditional country with a contemporary sound.
All her greats are here like her ballads Never Again Again,The Fool,I Hope You Dance,Why They Call It Falling and her duet with Willie Nelson Mendocino Country Line.
As well as her great uptempos You've Got To Talk To Me,(Now You See Me)Now You Don't,Ashes By Now,the very witty I'll Think Of A Reason Later and the cracking Does My Ring Burn Your Finger.
She also includes 2 new recordings to round off the album-The Wrong Girl and Time For Me To Go.Both great songs!
You can't go wrong with this cd of one of country's best female artists...

Johnny Cash was born in Arkansas in 1942. Formerly in the United States Air Force, Cash made his name in the vibrant American country scene of the 1950's, but it would be wrong to pigeon hole the man, if anything I would try to stick him between Rock N Roll, Folk and maybe half way towards Tennessee, but certainly Cash's sound was very much of his own with a voice unmistakably his.
Hit after hit would be very prominent throughout his output in the 1950s and early sixties; however by 1963 his excesses caught up with his, and his career was most definitely on the wane, a brief come back in 1964 did nothing to halt this slide.
After a turbulent few years, Cash, thanks to new wife June Carter had managed to compose himself and ... Read More:

"Sundirtwater" is the fifth album from The Waifs, a folk-rock band from Western Australia. Their resume is fairly impressive, with their double-platinum fourth album "Up All Night", and a tour with Bob Dylan both in Australia and North America. "Sundirtwater" is a fine addition to their discography as well, with a title track which has a jazzy groove which is as addictive as anything I have heard recently. There are also a dozen other tracks which may not have the same initial draw as "Sundirtwater", but all of which hold their own with repeated listening.
This is not a group trying to repeat their past successes, but one which is exploring their musical limits. Undoubtedly they will not shed the "Folk-Rock" label with this album, but the styles ... Read More:

This collection of hits and more recent tracks covers several styles of music spanning a career output of over 20 years. Therefore, unless you are a big Linda Ronstadt fan, not all the tracks will appeal to all listeners. However, a number of the hits sound great and are well produced. The bright opening of the CD hits a major glitch (and not the last one) at tracks 4 & 5, when LR throws in a couple of recent songs to complement the older hits. All the new material is frankly awful and would not be produced were it not by a well-known 'name' in the industry, except possibly as muzak. However powerful and listenable LR's voice, the reality is that there is only so much anyone can do with sloppy material. The hits retain their appeal generally and were the reason ... Read More:
