The 'Dylan Phase' refers to a statement a friend once made in regards to Bob Dylan's 1965-1967 phase, when everything he released, wheather on any of his albums or bootleg recordings, seemed to resonate with such greatness and importance as to reduce everything else to a mere substitute.

This is how I now feel Okkervil River are currently enjoying. With each release they seem to edge closer to a greatness that many aspire to but rarely claim. 'The Stage Names' was one of 2007's best records and this album just proves the vast amount of songwriting and playing talent that the band were creating around the time.

They were were inventive, witty, wildly misunderstood and possessed with a unique vision and aesthetic that stood them head and shoulders above almost every other band of their time. If you don't own any Smiths material, buy the 2 CD version of this and start here to enter a wider world.

But if you are familiar with The Smiths... then, honestly...what's the point? Why? After "The Best Of ...1", "The Best of....2", "The Very Best Of", "Singles", comes "The Sound Of The Smiths". The FIFTH best of compilation from a band that only made four official albums in their lifetime.

This seems a little disappointing after the imaginative selection assembled for the sister compilation "Edge of the Eighties". That set pulled together less obvious tracks by Soft Cell, Altered Images, New Order et al as well as rarely heard gems by Blue Zoo, Swansway and The Mobiles to name a few. Now, the seventies equivalent is out and I was hoping to get a similarly well thought out collection. However, as wonderful as most of the music is, it's a bit of a let down to see that once again we get Teenage Kicks, Another Girl Another Planet and Roadrunner etc. Most of the tracks here regularly turn up on any New Wave-themed compilation.

To say Nick Cave isn't the force he once was, is like saying Vlad the Impaler had minor anger management issues. Glories LONG gone, he's resorting to loose balladeering and conventional rock in a vain and desperate attempt to disguise the fact he's got nothing new to say and should've given up on this music thing a long time ago.
A new Nick Cave album is cause for despair, where once it was cause for celebration. Ok, you can't go on re-living past triumphs (ask Morrissey) but the guy must have SOME of that early threat and purpose kicking around somewhere. Where's the gusto and urgency that drove classics like 'Nick the Stripper' or 'Mr Clarinet' ?

I never write reviews, but as this album has received wildly differing opinions I thought I would add mine. I love it. It's got lots of energy and the lyrics are interesting without getting too abstract. She is nothing like anything else out there, Lily Allen included (although she is great too), so don't try to compartmentalise. Just enjoy it. It's my most listened to album of the last 12 months as I can identify with the moods instilled by these songs.

Ok so i have been browsing the other reviews written by other people, there not that good are they? I think this album is a product you either love or hate, for me i love this album its very different to the previous stereophonics music, i must admit i was a little dissapointed that there wasnt much rock and roll - the songs can almost be seen as a little depressing, but it has grown on me A LOT!
To put things short, buy the album if you are a stereophonics fan, give it chance to grow on you, you wont be dissapointed with songs such as mr writer, vegas two times and handbags and the gladrags which is an excellent Rod Stewart cover (almosts sounds like him), but most of all i think this album projects Kelly's unique husky voice.

The Music return after a hefty absence with an album reminding us all what a talent they are. Despite numerous bands fusing dance and rock, they were ahead of the curve and still do it better than most.

The album itself makes for great listening. There are moments such as "Fire" that could sit on either of Strength in Numbers predecessors, but the formula has been tweaked to give a fresh perspective on the bands sound. There are moments of respite in the likes of "The Spike" and "Drugs" which show a new lower range for singer Rob Harvey, and it helps give an sinister edge to proceedings.

Elsewhere Adam Nutters' big guitar riffs are present, but only in equal measure to some brilliantly intricate guitar work too. Tracks like The Last One show the band ... Read More:

Are you a Muse Fan? If you're thinking of buying this album then you are either a Muse fanatic already, or you will be very soon, and if you haven't heard any of these songs already then I envy you - you are in for one crazy audio thrill-ride.
What's so great about this album is it's originality - it takes our usual idea of what rock music is and turns it on its head, electrocutes it, sticks it in a blender and then stuffs it down your throat, much to your masochistic glee. The music is dark, vicious and incredibly addictive, and by the time you've heard Bliss, with its ethereal arpeggios and super high voltage riffs, you will be hooked to the end. It's super badass.
