Im 13 years old and im usually into rockish type music but after hearing one Nouvelle Vague song i fell in love with them. I heard the cover of "Ever fall in love" (first sung by the buzzcocks) on tv and i thought it was great so i decided to buy their newest album. The re sings are amazing and the easy flowing mood is great when your trying to relax. I think that anybody could enjoy this album and the great voice of the Nouvelle Vague singers. The instuments are played fantastically and ever though i paid more on the high street than i could have on amazon i feel that it was well worth my money. The thing I like about Tom Waits is his songs are little movies. So it is impossible to hear Innocent When You Dream (a particularly good song on this album) without seeing barroom grotesques, squeezing tears from their faces as they howl out the tune. And of course the irony of a beautiful, delicate lyric being throttled by these Tom Waits reprobates is just perfect.

One other thing I like about Mr T is that he 'acts' his songs. Therefore no matter how heartfelt, angry or etc the song, there is always a bit of tongue in the cheek, a bit of burlesque, a little twinkle in the eye. Therefore none of the rock star posturing of his peers, because there's just a touch of silliness and absurdity to it all, no matter how genuinely heartfelt.

ok so the comparisons to all the other work is inevitable, so how does it do?
well i would say very well. its instantly accessable and very,very,very catchy. the songs tear past at a frantic pace, riffs flying and melodies all over the place. ok so this isnt exactly complicated song writing but it is very effective as the songs will keep you humming the choruses for days.
plus the variety of song on display is as random as ever from straight up rockers like "hash pipe" and "photograph" to slightly more odd pop rock indie songs like "island in the sun".
this for me is easily one of the most brilliant summer listening albums ever made.

Alright? I've said it. This is the best record I've ever heard, which, by definition, means I think it's better than the majestic Songs For The Deaf. No snap decision this; I bought this when it came out, I thought it then, I haven't changed my mind. Maybe my mind was more open at the time because I wasn't really aware of the importance of Nick Olivieri's role prior to his departure - but I certainly don't think that the album is poorer because he's not on it. In fact, I was delighted that Alain Johannes was able to contribute (and then bring his "Eleven" partner Natasha Schneider with him on the tour).

Like S.Hammond in an earlier review I too am a huge Metallica fan and consider myself very open minded musically, and I too have tried again and again to get out of this CD what it should be - but it just isn't. Every now and then a bit works really well, but the vast majority does not - it just sounds like two completely different pieces of music are playing at the same time. The orchestra should add weight and emotion to the songs we know and love (check out Dream Theater's 'Score' DVD for an example of how it should be done) but it just makes them sound messy. Very disappointed.

you're too old - no excuses. This album makes Metallica sound average, dated and out of ideas. The Blister Exists is the best metal tune I've heard in at least a decade - buy it for that if nothing else. This CD is the sonic equivalent of an 18 wheeler crashing through your frontroom while you're eating your tea.

If this is your first look at Daniel Johnston then buy the dvd along with this cd it'll certainly make the listening process more enjoyable, the one floor with D.Js music is that he's not the best singer nor guitarist however don't be put off by this small, so small detail, cause what he lacks in ablity he churns into pure emotion, for me this is one of the stories of my generation, its that first stone thrown at golith, the one who stands up and shouts I TOO I'M ABLE,I TOO HAVE TALENT, he is a true unique being and the best of all is that after a listen you too will find inner beauty within yourself or be sick of the sound, he's like mustard really, some times that ham sandwich would have been nicer without.

As a person new to the band and what they had done previously i thought the first 3 tracks absolutely rocked one of the best starts to an album i've heard.
Downside being that theres only so much full on singing you can take which lets the rest of the album down pity their was'nt more songs in the mould of hypnotize which is the only other song i really liked.
