I wasn't quite sure how much I would enjoy this particular pairing of two of Dame Shirley's last albums for EMI's Columbia label. The track listing at first sight seems very much of its period and many of us have several versions of most of these songs in our collections already so I put this on with less enthusiasm than I had felt for most of BGO's reissues of Dame Shirley's work.
Good news: as usual, the sound is far superior to that on the vinyl originals but the performances and arrangements are so tingling with vitality and insight that there is no question of this being a routine listen. Several times, I have listened to this collection whilst doing some chores and found myself really listening and thoroughly enjoying what ... Read More:

I got this workout DVD on a recommendation from a friend. I can see how you might get results if you stuck to it, but I like my excercise to feel like excercise and this is really just too slow. Also living in a flat, there are some parts which it isn't practical to do for fear of disturbing the neighbours. I can see how it would work for some people, but I think I'll stick to the gym.

I remember listening to these songs when I was a child in my Mum's car. I'm not exactly an Easy Listening fan, but he has such a wonderful voice. His songs really are good and original. This collection has the best of all of his songs in my opinion. A very good buy!

Romanza" was my first Andrea Boticelli album and still remains my favorite. I think this is the tenor's most definitive collection, showcasing his sweet, rich sound, powerfully held long notes, and exquisite sense of cadence. Supposedly, this was the CD geared to "bridge the gap" between pop and opera. Boticelli certainly exhibits a diverse style with this top-notch selection of romantic songs.
When I originally bought "Romanza," back in the 20th century, I did so because of Botecelli's interpretation of "Con te Partiro," (Time To Say Goodbye"), which is still an exceptional song after all these years. It is dedicated to German World Light-Heavyweight boxing champion, Henry Maske and was performed at his farewell contest. Botecelli ... Read More:

The most prominent feature of this set is Gershwin's historic recordings of "Rhapsody In Blue" and "An American In Paris", but the remaining 45 tracks draw on a wide range of both American and British performers to produce a wide spectrum of classic interpretations. Whispering Jack Smith, Hutch, Jack Hylton, Roy Fox, Jack Simpson and Carroll Gibbons are all represented, as are Ella, Bing, and Billie, to name but a few. This really is a superb compilation.

Susannah McCorkle's notes to this compilation are so good-humored, as is her general approach to interpreting the songs, that it's a shock to find out it was her last project before committing suicide. The choice of "For all we know" as the last track is a bit shiver-inducing. Having said that, this is a hugely enjoyable selection covering her entire career. Highlights are "Waters of March" delivered like a magic charm, "I thought about you" a real late-night feel with a perfect tenor solo from the great Frank Wess and a nicely arranged tribute to Chet Baker "Look for the silver lining." In fact, all the tracks are highlights, not a "best of" but a "most requested" like the ultimate Susannah McCorkle gig which, sadly, none of us will ever see.

Truly the best of the albums, when Barry was at the peak of his career. As he says "I write the songs that make the young girls cry". He can certainly make this old girl cry with renditions of "If I Should Love Again" and "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again". The favourites, Copacabana, Mandy etc are all there.
If there's one album you should have in your collection it should be this one!
Release Date March 03, 2003
Mrs Mills tears it up on this collection of her greatest recordings. I remember the family sitting around the radiogram listening to Terry Wogan on a foggy morning. All of a sudden the happy sound of Mrs Mills banging at the ivories would fill the room. The smile she brought to the faces of us children brings back fond memories.
She brought new meaning to old songs with her very special intepretation of the classics. A surreal mix of honkytonk and post-Chopin with a slight hint of the English countryside, channelled through Liberace.
Mrs Mills rides again. Buy this album and understand her pure genius.

As a kid growing up, I found Jimmy Durante to have a style that was somewhat comic--and my reaction was exactly what he cultivated as part of his public persona. For those of us who were young during the waning years of his career, Jimmy was a clown.
Even now, no one ever could call his voice beautiful, yet I can think of no more fitting a talent to sing the songs on this CD. His raspy style perfectly fits the original moods of classics such as "As Time Goes By," "I'll Be Seeing You," and "Try A Little Tenderness." Every melody on this CD is a gem, and the way Jimmy styles them simultaneously makes the listener want to weep and to dance. Can there be a higher compliment for a crooner?
Many of you might remember Jimmy Durante ... Read More:
