Although Diana Krall might not be first choice for the best jazz singer in the world she still manages to drip her lyrics like honey over the already sumptuous arrangements in this collection of standards. Her vocals are at once languid and precise, distant and intense and when added to the bittersweet, fully orchestral back-ups, it all comes together in a most intoxicating way. A definite grower; for the impatient listener a first take might be their last but with subsequent plays, the nuances blossom until you realise that you are hearing something rather special.

I cannot believe how cheap this cd is. This is truly a wonderful album that is up there with my other favourite Chet cds and yet it has a bargain basement price. If you buy it I promise you wont be disappointed.

Some of the tunes on this are nearly fifty years old and they are still swinging. Wow, he may not be considered the coolest artist on the planet...but Kenny's got Balls!!!!!

This was the first Coltrane record I bought after seeing it offer. Well being called 'The Very Best of' I was expecting too much, but this isn't just hyperbole. A great selection of tracks and really stand out performances too (best version of 'My Favorite Things' I've heard).
Certainly a great introduction to the trane, highly accessible. I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur of the genre, by any stretch, but I imagine this would be a worth while purchase to the more seasoned listeners too.

The best Stan Getz album money can buy. Relaxing soothing sounds to wind down to. Jazz Masters have excelled themselves with this selection.

Richie Havens has found a whole new audience for his intense, emotional vocal style thanks to his collaborations with the likes of Groove Armada and subsequent solo live appearances. In the seventies he owed his major popularity to his inclusion in the film of the 1969 Woodstock festival, for which he opened and had to fill for over an hour, eventually improvising what became his own anthem, Freedom.
Before that he had been known to the cognoscenti from his influential Greenwich Village jazz-folk-rock interpretations of diverse material, using his unusual self-taught D-chord guitar tunings (not E-chord as is often written), and for his idiosyncratic song compositions. Although not a prolific writer, the original songs which peppered his ... Read More:

If you want a good starting point in the world of EST (or trio-jazz, for that matter), this may be it! The sounds, grooves and themes are very diverse; from the country-gospel of 'Believe, beleft, below'(even sounds a little bit like Floyd Kramer at some points)to the jungle of 'Did they ever tell Cousteau'. Absolute highpoint is the exstatic 'Elevation of Love'with an almost scary bass-solo. It has been said before; there may be 'faster' pianists, and technically more advanced drummers or bassists, but the interplay between the band-members is in a legue of their own!

They are obviously young and finding their own style but you can hear the tidy integration of Ornette Coleman and of Steve Coleman - different styles but cogent nontheless. If you are a fan of Kenny G (not the classy Garrett but the other one) then steer well clear of this album. It has twists and turns and is put together to hold interest conceptually, melodically and harmonically.
