This is one of my favourite CDs. Playing it on a high end hi-fi system shows it to be a superb recording, (and don't be put off by the fact it is LIVE), and has Diana Krall singing and playing in superb jazz style. What a pity she no longer makes good jazz CDs like this one.

Randy Crawford has one of the most distinctive voices in the music business and who better to do a jazz album with than the legendary
former-Crusader,Mr Joe Sample.
The album is wonderfully laid-back but is never bland and a wide range of material is given superb arrangements
This a very cool imprint on the whole project and repeated listenings often find new subtleties in Joe Sample's piano playing.
The great thing about Randy Crawford is the sheer joy she conveys with her singing and it is infectious.
A quite wonderful album.

Curious as to what the fuss was all about I ordered this cd. And I must confess that all three colleague-reviewers are correct in their assesment of this cd (with which I do not mean to say that I necessarily agree with their judgement). True, there is a lot more 78's surface noise than on most Vocalion or Past Perfect reissues. No, to me that isn't much of a problem, because quite honestly the "enhancement" often changes the aural picture of the original recording, not always for the better.
It is however also true that a little more care in the preparation would have prevented the irritating late start of two tracks ("Easy Come, Easy Go", where the first bar of the introductory guitar is all but missed and "Love you funny thing"); furthermore, ... Read More:

Very Best Of Smooth Jazz

I bought this album because it was cheap, and I am interested in jazz. Not that I am a jazz fanatic. I am usually an electronic buff, but want to explore other genres as well to not get the tunnel vision one tends to get with just listening to one genre. So I dare sometimes dive deep into jazz. Not that I have gotten the chance much, so this CD would be a first attempt.

Well, to be frank, I was mildly disappointed. This is not jazz, I know that much. This is soul of various origins. Granted some tracks are really old, and some are very good. But if soul was what I wanted, which is not the case, I would have gone to the local gas station and bought a 10 cd package of the stuff.

This is indeed a perfect partner for the subsequent "A Hundred Thousand Angels" album. The first 2 tracks alone should convince you that this is another meditation classic. It has the same winning formula of tuneful, contemplative music enriched with Lucinda Drayton's haunting vocals - a CD that you can actually sit back and listen to enraptured. A CD that really can help ease the cares of the world away, unlike the vast amount of banal 'musical wallpaper' that is on sale in garden centres, health shops etc. under the banner of 'New Age'. Don't buy these poor substitutes - go for the real thing, and whilst you are at it, perhaps treat yourself to some Secret Garden as well.

Louis Malle's Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (Lift to the Scaffold) was in many ways the definitive Nouvelle Vague crime movie (later relations included Bande a Part and Tirez Sur La Pianiste); it's soundtrack was also definitively 'new wave.' The great Miles Davis, breaking from his earlier collaborations with Charlie Parker & Gil Evans was on a three-week tour of Europe & somehow ended up scoring Malle's movie in a single-mythic night-time session (which very much seemed to mirror the improvised nature of many New Wave works). This CD was issued to accompany the tour of English Cathedrals and Abbeys by the ensemble. The CD is superbly recorded to capture echoes and the placing of groups of instruments round the churches. It needs repeated listening as it is not easy listening by any means. The appearance of a well-known Bach theme is a wonderful moment; truly spine tingling
