This album, like Black and Blue, saw the Stones effectively reduced to a 4-piece. Keith has to work that much harder and it shows in some strong songs.
"Gimmie Shelter" is not only, in my opinion, the best Stones song ever, but also one of the best songs ever. It is simply stunning. "Love In Vain" has a nice feel to it, although I rarely warm to Stones covers (apart from the adolescent charm of the early covers on their first and third albums). "Country Honk" is an uptempo country track that feels right and not contrived, while "Live With Me" showed the Stones with a snarl and contempt that was was still convincing when they were in their mid 20's. The Story So Far: The Very Best Of Rod Stewart... the title tries to convince us that this is everything we need and that it represents all the best material by Rod up to a certain point... well, it doesn't do that completely, but it is a really good effort. There are a few "MUST HAVE" songs on it, so that works OK. There are a few "WHY THAT ONE" songs as well (I can't stand Waltzing Matilda... surely there was one track better somewhere in the past... well of course we know there was... this is just a record company exec's choice)

"A total classic record, that is unbeatable in many ways".

This particular tribute came from one Paul McCartney, who over the last forty years has declared his never ending love for 'Pet Sounds'. And we sure as hell don't know more than he does, so it goes without saying that 'Pet Sounds' is one of the greatest albums ever made.

But what astonishes the most, is that Brian Wilson wrote this virtually single handedly. The Beatles had just released the amazing 'Revolver', for Wilson to come out with something even better.

'Rust Never Sleeps' is an intriguing,odd and at times excellent album with songs which must rank among Neil Young's finest.The album was recorded on the road during the 'Comes A Time' 1978 tour and it's a half acoustic,half electric affair.The majority of the tracks were either recorded in one take or live in concert but because the audience is omitted during the mix the album isn't 'live' but yearns to be.You will need to purchase the excellent 'Live Rust' to appreciate the actual tour concerts and includes four of the nine songs here.

[One CD, with a running time of 78:22] This collection of Moody Blues hits would better be called, "The Moody Blues Through The Years." The songs run from their early Go Now (1964), through I Know You're Out There Somewhere (1988). Along the way, we get the touching Isn't Life Strange, the haunting Forever Autumn, the radiant The Voice, and many other great songs.

My one and only complaint is that Nights In White Satin is included without Graeme Edge's spellbinding poem Late Lament. I have always found that poem to be a fantastic epilogue to the song. But that's such a minor complaint. This is a great CD, and well worth the money.

For their fourth offering Tull continued with the folk tinged rock, introduced on 'Benefit'. Viewed by many as a concept album, I prefer to class it as split themed, as each side of the original vinyl contained songs that were about a subject rather than building up to tell a story.

Tracks 1 - 6 (side 1) features an even split of electric and acoustic numbers, dealing with destitution and homelessness. Title track 'Aqualung' with it's superb opening riff which immediately grabs your attention, followed by the uptempo 'Cross eyed Mary' provide a lively opening before the acoustic numbers kick in, 'Cheap day return', 'Mother goose' and especially 'Wond'ring aloud' are the best Tull acoustic fayre to date, while 'Up to me' has more than a little humour in evidence.

Dire Straits' third album came at their version of the proverbial crossroads. Apart from losing a member, they decided not to release volume 3 of the same and instead created a few epics. Those first two albums are marvellous, but here they reached out for the dramatic, typified by the 'Carousel' intro and the Shakespearean theme of the second track. 'Tunnel Of Love' sees the band moving away from the pub band route and into a wider soundscape, Mark Knopfler giving full rein to vivid lyrical fairground imagery. You can read loads of thoughts about this iconic album in the other reviews. What you need to know that the other reviews don't mention is the vastly superior sound quality on this CD compared to the original LP. I don't know what it was about the original LP, (the cut, the production, the engineering, the studio?) but it always sounded to me as though it had been recorded in a cardboard box. I note that King Crimson's Larks Tongue in Aspic was also recorded at EG's Command Studios and that sounded flat to me too. Anyway, this mix is much improved and polishes this diamond very nicely.

Ok,so some mixed reviews on this one - firstly,I am no big fan of Rod Stewart but I am a big fan of good music and this type of music in particular.
For a top rock star like Rod to put his reputation on the line by recording these songbooks must have been a big decision for him to make.I agree that he is no old style crooner but I think he makes a great attempt at it.
There are many great performances in this collection and to be fair,he does himself proud on most of the tracks.
I think however that the orchestral arrangements are a little bland at times and an artist draws his inspiration from those around him and relies heavily on great arrangements and inspiring performances by supporting musicians.
There can be no doubt that the material is superb.It just doesn't get any better ... Read More:
