I can understand some folk purists wanting to hate this before they've even heard it, and it could have ended up as a complete dogs breakfast. Yes if they'd given the whole undertaking to Bellowhead it might have been a classic, but on the whole it's not turned out too bad, and there's something to be said for the eclectic nature of the thing.

I'll have nothing said against Baby Gramps, he's a fine guitarist and that's no affectation, he really does sound like Popeye's drunken brother. Surprisingly of the "Big Names" Sting makes the best fist of his effort. I say surprising because he strikes me as the most unlikeable of people. I think that ZZ Top are a very good band and they remain one of my favorite bands of all-time. this is one great collection and they made great blues music in the 1970s and the 1980s. here are my comments about most of the songs. GIMME ALL YOUR LOVING this is a really great song and is my 2nd favorite song on the entire cd. SHARP DRESSED MAN this is pretty great too, but probably my 5th favorite. ROUGH BOY is a ballad that is too slow and too sad for me. TUSH is an excellent blues rocker remains one of my 5 favorites on this album. MY HEAD'S IN MISSISSPII is a blues rocker one of my favorites, PEARL NECKLACE not my fave, IM BAD IM NATHIONWIDE this is pretty good although remains as a 10th favorite or something. This is the perfect soundtrack for the movie, though not necessarily a great soundtrack, if that makes sense!! A lot of thought went into the selection of tracks, with obvious numbers such as 'don't let the sun go down on me' and 'people are strange', and great tracks such as 'cry little sister'. The album has a nice, gothic feel to it. That said, take it away from its context to the movie, I'm not sure its something a casual listener would get into.
Personally, I like the film, so I like the soundtrack. Watch the film first, then you can decide.....

The Beatles final album (last to be recorded) is a mixed bag. At one end of the spectrum there are Harrison's two landmark songs - 'Something' & 'Here Comes The Sun' then there is Lennon's frankly baffling 'I Want You Shes's So Heavy' and McCartneys trite 'Maxwells Silver Hammer'.
This is the sound of a band falling apart. Of course, this being the Beatles, there are also moments of pure brilliance - 'Come Together' is John's last great Fabs song and his band mates, especially Paul, help turn the swampy blues track into a minor masterpiece. Ringo's jaunty 'Octopus's Garden' may be a lightweight kids song but the inventive arrangement and clever harmonies are often overlooked.

Only ABBA's second album was already putting The Beatles in the shade!

Lots of powerful numbers here that have since become famous favourites; 'Mamma Mia', 'SOS', 'Bang-A-Boomerang' and 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do'. Also one or two 'oddities' for ABBA in the form of; 'Tropical Loveland', (which could have been a solo for Frida) the unusual 'Man In the Middle', and the one that is almost bordering on the classical with 'Intermezzo No. 1'. ABBA also utilised the very sexy voice of Bjorn on a couple of tracks here, and this album also includes the infamous track 'So Long' that was to be forever remembered as the only single of theirs never to chart. This album can in no way be described as groundbreaking-but who cares-it takes the best parts of 'Smile' and builds upon them-for me 'Smile' was good and at times great, but it didn't quite work as a whole, whereas this album most definitely does and to be honest there's not a bad track on it:
1.The Devils Beat-Not a great choice of single, but I do like it and it probably is the most original track. 7.5/10
2.Shape I'm In-Generic pop and I love it! Catchy and melodic; brill vocals! 9/10
3.Wounded Hearts-My least favourite song on the album-forgettable. 6/10
4.Saturday Night-Catchy pop ditty! 8/10
5.Beatbox-Growing on me immensely, an intelligent song. 8/10
6.Remote Control Me-Great fun and what Sandi does absolutely best! 10/10

When I first heard James was reuniting, my heart was being tugged on in two directions. I would love to hear James again, but I was expecting a half hearted attempt at rekindling the magic that made James such a good band in the first place. "Hey Ma" proves my doubts wrong, and then some.

"Bubbles" begins the album with a song about new life, describing Tim Booth's joy as a father. This song is reminiscent of Laid era work - uplifting, but atmospheric. While Eno isn't here to produce this album, his presence is still felt.
