Steely Dan's first album, like many first albums, suggests that they haven't settled on their approach. Yet this is to its advantage. While they seem to make only great albums, this is more the work of a rock band, rather than the usual Becker/Fagen dominated jazz-inflected musings. Sure, they wrote all the material here, but the other band members are allowed a more prominent role. The lead vocals of David Palmer, for instance, highlight that Donald Fagen's voice, while distinct, is probably Steely Dan's weakest link. Nevertheless, this is a minor gripe. From first track to last, this is solid-groove rock music, sophisticated, lyrically and musically imaginative, with the odd daring arrangement. All of the players get to express themselves ... A Great album ,with a mix of live and studio tracks.
Personally I think the live tracks bring some great energy to the album and even though they are live they have good production.
Turn it up loud and enjoy!
Love it!!

Well-crafted songs, an expressive voice, wonderful harmonies, thoughtful lyrics and a lightness of touch on this beautiful collection of acoustic-based melodies. Wonderful.
Release Date September 10, 2001
This is the best album I've heard in ages! Being a collection spanning Jimy Somemrville's career, it is a real mixture of old favourites and some less well known tracks. To be played loudly at all times and singing along is a must.

I fell in love with this movie when it first opened in theaters and I loved all the music in it, including the score, and particularly the bit where Colin Firth proposes to Aurelia. But when I bought the CD here in the US, all it had what the popular pop stuff! (I guess they figured Americans wouldn't appreciate the beautiful instrumental music? Probably right actually.) You guys in the UK got the whole deal. It will be well worth the overseas shipping!!

Who'd have thought it !!
I don't know - it doesn't really seem right - the urbane always in control Mr Becker whose albums (solo or with Steely Dan) are always so immaculately produced doing reggae ! I mean reggae for God's sakes - and dub reggae too probably the "sloppiest" music going. It just should not fit - except it does. And it fits very well indeed.
I don't think, as many other people who have reviewed this CD obviously do, that Becker and Fagen are the be all and end all of music (go on tell me that's because I'm not "sophisticated" enough)but as Steely Dan they made some good albums and individually they have done the same. I still prefer "The Nightfly" but there again I have lived with that album for many years.

Next to the breakthrough dance-pop of 1983's Quickstep & Sidekick, and the imperious perfect pop of Into The Gap a year later, this record felt uneven and decidedly leaden upon release in 1985. Now, as part of Edsel's generally superb deluxe editions of the mid-period TT catalogue, comes a chance to re-evaluate the album which saw the band's commercial fortunes take a sharp dip in the UK.
Some things haven't changed; the remixed/re-recorded versions of the Top 20 singles Lay Your Hands On Me and Don't Mess With Doctor Dream are still inferior to their 7" counterparts, and the segue between the latter and former sounds no less clumsy than it ever did. Tokyo, meanwhile, always felt like a poor Quickstep-era B-side and betrayed a muddled creative vision for ... Read More:

I never write reviews, but as this album has received wildly differing opinions I thought I would add mine. I love it. It's got lots of energy and the lyrics are interesting without getting too abstract. She is nothing like anything else out there, Lily Allen included (although she is great too), so don't try to compartmentalise. Just enjoy it. It's my most listened to album of the last 12 months as I can identify with the moods instilled by these songs.

Alanis Morissette is a brilliant artist, although Jagged Little Pill has to be her best album to date. With songs such as "Mary Jane" and the famous "Ironic", it's a real sing-along CD which never gets old! A Must-Buy for all music lovers!
Aimee, Aimee, Aimee. What can I say? I have been a longtime fan of Aimee Mann. At her best she is a writer of beautiful songs charting the ups and downs (often the downs!) of love and life. However, something seems to have gone wrong with the current album, I'm sad to say.
Unlike many, I was a big fan of The Forgotten Arm, Mann's previous record. Dismissed by most critics purely on the grounds of its `concept', it was a set of strong songs and at least a couple good enough to be ranked amongst Aimee's best. Unfortunately, the magic is somehow missing on Smilers. The songs are pretty enough; it's just that after a number of listens, they steadfastly refuse to stand out; not one has lodged itself in my brain (except maybe Borrowing Time, and that's due to its echoes ...
