This DVD version of the famous Red Rocks concert has been a long time coming and it does not disappoint. It is great to have the whole concert restored and the missing tracks are so good one wonders why they were ever omitted fom the original VHS version. The most impressive aspect of this release is the improved sound. The bass in particular is awesome, and I can hear phases from Adam Clayton that I have never been able to hear before. Edge's guitar is equally impressive and the whole sound picture is perfetly balanced.

Odyssey

The version of Odyssey I'm revieweing is the original one with the photo of Hayley on the seashore, but it's basically the same album as this one. There are a couple of track changes, but all the ones I've referred to are present on this version. The record company has an annoying habit of releasing different versions of the same album to make a new album sale for the sake of a couple of extra songs.

This is Hayley Westenra's most accomplished album so far. Her previous international album, Pure, showed a singer with real talent but recorded too early in her career, with expressiveness and diction insufficiently developed. One of my best friends played this to me when it came out. I was a "prog rock" fan at the time, and considered his obsession with Dylan as rather quaint & vaguely hippy. At first I couldn't get my head around it - and Idiot Wind both intrigued & irritated.

A couple of years later I went to Blackbush to see the old boy perform in a field - and the stand outs all came from this album. So I revisited it - and found out that I'd grown up!

Over 30 years later I never get tired of it. The first side (of the old LP) is unsurpassed, the second side is pretty nearly as good - my favourites change all of the time. This is my No 1 album of all.

Great ! Superb ! Fantastic ! I agree that picture could have been better, but music overcomes it all ! Something not seen. We in Croatia would say "prava festa" (true fiesta) for all of people in the venue: the musitians and the audience, and therefore all the people who watch it on DVD.... Really must have DVD.

Elvis' only album of the '50s with no fast tempo rock and roll, and for good reason: it was his first Christmas, so the decibel level had to be lower. He does wail on the incredible blues-rock opener, "Santa Claus Is Back In Town". It's Elvis doin' his thing, driving home the double-entendres. It's been written that this album was banned, and the banners didn't have to go too far into the album to find something...too strong.
"Blue Christmas" is medium-tempo blues-rock, a gem of a tune, featuring a typically great vocal and some genuine Presley low-down blues licks. If there was room back in the day, this could gone into the Top 20.

Way To Normal

Before I start this review, I just want to say that I have been a huge fan of Ben's music since the release of the debut Ben Folds Five album back in 1995 and consider 2001's 'Rockin' The Suburbs' album to be one of my all time favourites, so I write from the perspective of a long-time admirer of the man and his work. However, with the exception of the 'Fear Of Pop' project, I think that - sadly - in 'Way To Normal' Ben has probably made his worst studio album to date.

The album starts off brightly. 'Hiroshima', a musical pastiche of Elton John's 'Bennie & The Jets', is a nice piece of inoffensive pop and 'Dr. Yang' is full of energy and pounding piano keys, although, production-wise, it could have been slightly less crashy and noisy. This was the album that put Enya on the map musically and it's easy to see why.Haunting vocals,mystical music and an artist of rare talent.

With many fantastic songs including 'Orinoco Flow','Storms In Africa' and 'Evening Falls',this is an album you can switch on,chill out to and just lose yourself.It has stood the test of time too and sounds as refreshing today as when it was originally released.

'Watermark' is a fine album,indeed it is a classic of it's type.Enya may not be to everyone's taste but she is a refreshing alternative to so much of the manufactured pop around today and deserves the worldwide success she has achieved.

Showbiz

Just check out the clean guzzling bass line on Muscle Museum. The song sets up the perfect suburbian distopia and turns into nothing short of the perfect pop rock single when Matt's voice melts into a suspended guitar solo.

Elsewhere theres the title track Showbiz, an epic of enclosing tension and Cave a similar epic flooding with teenage anxt.

The back end of this record reveals more wonderfully rounded heavy yet alternative rock songs. The lyrics are spot on all the way through especially in Escape and Overdue.

Theres a lush little acoustic ballad too in Unintended, so good they still sing it on tour.
